J. M. MARKHAM.
DEVICE FOR PREYENTING CATTLE FROM GORING.
. Patented Nov. 9, l1886.
UNITED` STATES PATENT EErcE.
JACKSON M. MARKHAM, OF VILLIAMSVILL,-MISSOUBL DEVICE FORPREVENTING CATTLE: FROM GORING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,337, dated November 9, 1886.
` Application filed Scpteinber22,18`86. Serial No. 214,259. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JACKSON M. MARKHAM, of Williamsville, in the county of Wayne and State of Missouri, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing Cattle from Gering; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention has relation to a device for preventing cattle from gering, and has for its object to furnish such a device which will be simple in construction, cheap in cost, and effective in preventing cattle from indulging in the vicious and dangerous habit of butting and gering, as before stated.
It consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts which are fully described, an'd specically pointed out in the claims hereto appended;
Referring to the accompanying drawings,4
Figure l is a perspective view of an'animal with the device shown attached to the horns. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the device attached on a horn. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the spring-tip. Fig. 4 is a detail view of oneof the guide plates or lugs, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the same, showing grooves therein in which an attaching-wire is placed.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A is the tip or guard for the horn, which consists of the socket or casing B, having the circumferential top iiange, a, the slots b on each side thereof, and the coiled spring C, secu red therein, as shown in Fig. 3.
D is asolid metal plug fitting loosely within the socket B, and provided with the tapering screw-threaded opening, into which the end or tip of the horn is secured.
E E are two screws entering through the slots b b and into plug D, thereby securing the socket B and plug C together.
F is a suitable wire barb or metal rod, se-
cured -at one end in the flange c, guided and supported by the plates or guides G, secured to the horns, and terminating in close proximity to the forehead or head of the animal.
The guides G G consist each of a curved base-plate, e, conforming to the curvature of the horn, and pre vided with the teeth e', which penetrate the horn, the circumferential grooves e e, and the lugf, provided with eye g. The said guides are of different sizes, as shown, to correspond with the diameter and curvature of the horn, and fastened at proper intervals along the horn bythe penetrating-teeth e, and
additionally secured thereto bywires seated in the grooves e e and fastened around the horn.
The operation of my invention may be described as follows: The device being secured on each horn, as shown in Fig. 2, should the i animal attempt to gore or strike its horns against any object or obstruction, the socket is forced inward, causing the wire to be guided and pushedl back into the flesh at the base of the horns. Vhen the pressure is removed, the normal tendency of the spring causes the socket to resume its original position, thereby retracting the barb. Thus the animal is soon taught that the only way to avoid the disagreeable and annoying pricking sensation is to desist fromthe habit of butting or gering.
It is obvious that any suitable equivalent Wire-guiding devices may be attached to the horn; or the exact construction of the tip may be altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention. f
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination of the socket and spring with the wire barb secured at one end to said socket and the guiding-plates for said wire barb, all arranged as described.
2. rlhe combination of the socket having an external circumferential iiange, and slots on v IOO external circumferential flange, and the slots In testimony that I claim the foregoing as on each sidelhereof, the spring secured within, my own I affix my signature in presence of two Io the plug, the screws entering said plug, the Witnesses. Wire barb, the guiding-plates having teeth on 5 their bottoms, and grooves, as shown, the lugs having eyes therein and wires forlattaching saidY plates to the horn of an animal, as set forth.
JACKSON M. MARKHAM.
