E" JI SPINDLE SUPPORT. No. 352,222. v Patented-Nam 9; 1886.
UNITED STAT S PATENT OF ICE.
EDGAR CARROLL, OF WORCESTER, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE DRAPER & SONS, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPINDLE-SUPPORT. V
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,222, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed Tune 22, 1886. Serial No. 205,884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR J. CARROLL, of
Worcester, county of Worcester, and State of ings in which the lateral bearing. or the pintle of the spindle for holding the foot of the spindle is located above the base or top of the bolster or step-rail, the said bearing being supported in a yielding manner, whereby usual I supporting-tubescontainingindependentloose bolsters surrounded by fibrous packingsor oil are dispensed with.
In accordance with my invention, a rigid tube-like bearing to receive the pintle of the spindle and be surrounded by the sleeve-whirl has a foot, which is located above the surface of the usual bolster or step-rail, the said foot having at or near one extremity thereof a vertical flange or extension, which is attached loosely by a suitable screw or pivot to a rigid face formed upon a base; or it may be the bolster or step-rail, the base being, however, preferable because of cheapness of construe tion.
Figure 1, in vertical section, shows a spindlehearing, base, rail, and sleeve-whirl embodying my invention, the spindle-being in elevation. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the bearing and base alone. Fig. 3, in elevation, shows a modified form of bearing embodying my invention as attached to a rail, the latter being in section; and Fig. 4 is a top or plan view of the bearing shown in'Fig. 3', its top foot being partially broken out to show the screw or bolt for attaching it to the base.
The bolster or step-rail A, the spindle B, having the sleeve-whirl B, and the pintle B are all as common. The rail A has secured to it by a nut, O, a base, D, which rests upon the surface of the rail, and is provided with a face, D, preferably made as an ear, located substantially at right angles to the level of the top of the rail A.
My improvedv bearing consists, essentially,
of a rigid stiff tube, E, having a foot, E, the said tube receiving in its bore the pintle B of the spindle, and being surrounded externally by the sleevewhirl, the foot of the bearing in the present invention containing also the block a, which constitutes the step for the pintle. This bearing E E has at one end an ear, E, which is joined loosely to the vertical face D by a pin or bolt, D the said pin being extended loosely through one and screwed or fixed to the other, as shown best in Fig. 1, a yielding packing, as at b, being preferably interposed between thesaid ears to constitute a cushion and afford the bearings E E an op E E about the locking screw or stud as a center, I have provided the base with a pin or stud, d,which enters a hole or recess of larger diameter in the foot D of the bearing.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 3 and 4t showing a modification of my invention, it
will be noticed that the ear E is directed vertically downward from the foot of the bearing, instead of upward, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and that the face D forms part of one side of the base or rail A, the ear E being connected to the face D by means of twolocking bolts 0r screws, D, which are passed through the ear E loosely, and into screw-threaded portions of the rail, a fibrous or elastic packing of textile or other usual material being interposed between the face D and the ear E the under side of the bearing being supported above the top of the to which the said ear is secured, an interposed packing, and means to loosely connect the said I 5 car with the said face, the foot of the bearing being supported above and externally with relation to the bolster or step-rail, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 20 to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGA 1% J. CARROLL.
