SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.352,202,dated November 9, 18,86.
Application filed July 20, 1886.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HARRY MYRoN REEsoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Row Corn-Planters, of`
lVIy invention relates to mechanism for actuating the dropping-slides of corn-planters, such mechanism being operated by a knotted wire stretched across the field; and the object of my invention is to improve the construction and increase the efficiency of this class of mechanism.
To the above purpose my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of conscribed and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my iniproved check--row attachment, looking at the front-of the same, the parts being partially inverted in order to more clearly show details of construction of the mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the rear of the same, the position of the parts being reversed as compared with Fig. l. Fig.,3 is a detached view illustrating certain details of construction.
In the said drawings, A designates a beam which rests upon the seed-planting machine. At each end of this beam is secured a horizontal beam, B.
C designates a shaft, which extends from one bar, B, to the'other, above the beam A, and parallel to the latter, the ends of said shaft rest-ing in bearing-plates Nupon the said beams B. The beams B are strengthened against lateral strains by the oblique braces b, leading to the beam A.
Upon the beam A is secured a slidingbar, D, the movement of which is controlled by straps d d, embracing the bar and secured to a friction-roller, d,and these rollers are engaged by cams e upon sleeves E, whichw are secured to shaft C by set-screws e', as shown. Upon the front side of beam A is secured 'a Serial No. 208,556. (No model.)
At each end of the shaft C is loosely mounteda forkedlever, H, between the arms of which passes the check-row wire, and the tappets upon said wire throwing the levers as the machine is draw along. At the point of attachment of each lever H to the shaft C said lever is formed with a notch or shoulder, h2, which engages one of four teeth, t', upon the contignous clutch I. which is secured rigidly to the end of shaft C. By this means each throw of lthe levers H serves to partially turn the shaft G, and through the cams e and sliding bar D to actuate the dropping-slide of the planter. Each lever; H isreturned, after each throw by the check-row wir/e, by a spring, J, surrounding the end of shaft C, and interposed between the contiguous bearing-bracket Non bar B and the lever H. In order to prevent the springs J from wearing the shaft C, a sleeve, j, is interposed between each spring and the shaft. A
' At one end-of the outer extremitiesiof the bar B, at the front thereof, is secured a bracket, K, in the form of a casting, said bracket having a-lug, 7c, upon which the pulley K for the check-row wire is mounted; also a lug, k', which serves as a stop to limit the backward throw of the forked levers, and an upwardlyextending lug,- k2, which serves to guide the check-row wire to the pulley K. At the opposite rear end of each bar B is secured a bracket, L, at the inner end of whichis a project-ion, Z, which serves as a'stop for the forked lever, to limit the throw of the same, while upon the rear end of said bracket are mounted two rollers, Z" Z', between which passes the check-row line from the pulley K, guards m m being placed upon the outer ends of the kspindles of said rollers to confine the checkrow wire properly between said rollers.
The operation of the above-described mechanism isas follows: As the planter is drawn IOO along, the'vtappets upon the wire successively throw the forked lever downward, and turn the shaft C intermittently at each throw. The cam-blocks E on the {shaft C are so set that their cams e work oppositely to each other upon the rollers d of sliding bar D, and thus throw said bar first one way and then the other to actuate the arm G, and through it the droppingslide of the planter. The length of throw of the arm G, and consequently the degree of' movement of the dropping-slide, may be regulated either by varying the positions of the cam-blocks upon shaft C or by varying the position of pivot g in slot fof bracket F, by varying the length of arm G or the position of pin h in slot g,- hence a very accurate adjustment of the mechanism may be effected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a horizontal beam,y a
rotary shaft having the tappet-arms, the cams carried by the rotary shaft, a reciprocating bar, D, supported on the beam and having the rollers at its ends arranged in the path of the cams, and a projecting pin, h, at its middle, a slotted arm, F, affixed to the beam and having a pin, g, adj ustably connected thereto, a slotted bar, G, pivoted centrally to the pin y, and having the pin L fitted in the slot in its inner end, and an adjustable piu, hf', fitted in the slot of the opposite end of the bar and adapted to connect the latter with the seedAslide, substantially asdescribed,for the purpose set forth.
