UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs W. BONTA, OF'PHlLADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TELEPHONE-TRANSMITTER.
EiPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,177, dated November 9, 1886, Applicationfiled March 11, 1886. Serial No?194,s02. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. BoNTA, a
citizen of theUnited States, .residing at Phila- Figure l is a sectional elevation of a tele-- phonic transmitter. embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central horizontal section of transmitter-box and plan of diaphragm,
electrodes, table, and its support attached to the hinged front of the box; and Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of loose or ball electrode, grooved tablegvedge, and support for the latter.
or lowered by means of awedge to alter or'adjust the initial contact-pressure between the electrodes; and it has for its object simplicity of construction and arrangement ofparts, whereby easy access to the electrodes and table may be obtained for adjusting the height of the table or platform to vary the initial contact-pressure between the electrodes.
My invention accordingly consists of the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A representsabox or casing, having ahinged front or door, a, provided with a mouth-piece, a, and to which is secured in any suitable manner the diaphragm B, having affixed thereto a carbon electrode, 12'. To the door is also secured a horizontally-arranged platform, 0, which projects into the box A and rests upon a fixed block or check-piece, a". Upon platform 0 rests a wedge, D, having a movement to and from the diaphragm, and forms support for preferably a carbon-plate, F, having preferably a longitudinal groove, f, in its upper side for the reception of a carbon ball or loose electrode, G, which contacts with the diaphragm-electrode, as shown. By pushing front a, the wedge D, plate F, and ball G are carried thereby and maintained in their relative positions when the door is opened or closed.
Any suitable .inductorium, K, may be employed, the primary 1 of which includes the diaphragm-electrode. 12, @ball G, table F, and
battery 3, and the secondary 2 forms part of the line.
I do not claim, broadly, in this application the means for vertically adjusting the platform without tilting the same, as that forms the subject-matter of an application filed on even date with this and numbered 194,801.
What I claim is 1. The combination ofabox, A,havi nghinged door a, a diaphragm having a fixed electrode and a platform secured tothe door, a wedge resting upon the platform, a plate supported by the wedge, and loose ball or electrode upon said plate in contact with the diaphragm-electrode, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of case-A, having checkpiece a, hinged door a, diaphragm B, having electrode b, and platform 0, secured to the door, wedge D, grooved plate F, and loose ball or electrode G, substantially as shown and'described.
3. The combination of case A, having removable front a, diaphragm B, platform C, secured to the door, wedge D, carbon-plate F, and loose ball or electrode Gr, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. BONTA.
