CHECK-ROW CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,985, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed June 17, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KLAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in check-row corn-planters; and it consists in` the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a check-row cornplanter constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being shown in position for use. Fig. 2 isaplan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the line x x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is adetail sectional View taken through the line y y of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken through the line zz of Fig. 4. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views. Fig. 9 is a detail View of the detachable rim for the supporting-wheels, and Fig. 10 is a sectional view showing the same applied.
A refers to the main frame, which consists of longitudinal parallel bars a and a', which are rigidly connected to heach other by crossbars a c at, the rear cross-piece, a, extending beyond the longitudinal beams and is provided with beveled ends. The main frame A has attached to the saine, between the crossbars a and c3, longitudinal bars a5, between which the rear end of the tongue A is pivotally attached by means. of a bolt, b, located near its rear end, said tongue being connected to the front portion of the main frame, as will be hereinafter set forth. To the upper front ends of the bars ai is attached a loop or bail, B, said bail carrying at its upper transverse portion a ratchet plate, B', having an outwardly-projecting central portion, to which a Serial No. 205,460. (No model.)
lever, b', is pivotally attached, said lever being provided at its lower end with an outwardly-projecting arm, to which a link, b2, is pivotally attached, said link being secured to the tongue in front of the frame. The lever b is provided with the usualsliding pawl and operating means, so that the same may be secured in any desired position, and by so ad- .justing the same the angle of the tongue may be varied so asto elevate or depress the rear portion of the frame.
C refers to a tubular axle, which' is bolted securely to the under side of the bars et and ct of the main frame, said axle having at tached thereto collars c c, against which the inner ends of the hubs of the wheels D D bear. On theouter edge of said hubs collars c are secured by means of pins which pass through perforations in said collars and the ends of the axle. The wheels D D are provided centrally upon their peripheries with angular projecting portions or V-shaped flanges d, which are located centrally thereon, said flanges being adapted to enter the soil so as to form depresthe sides of the flange d. The bar E, which carries the scrapersee, is provided within the main framewwith a foot-lever, e', by means of whiclethe Scrapers can be brought in contact with the wheels D, and when they are out of contact therewith this foot lever will abut against the cross-bar ctof the main frame and prevent-the bar turning, so that the scrapers will depend therefrom. It will be noticed that these scrapers are so located with respect to the wheels that the earth removed therefrom will fall in front of said wheels.
F refers to a transverse bar which is secured to the main frame, the ends thereof projecting beyond said frame. Adjacent to the outer side of the frame upon this bar F are secured cast- IOO iugsf, which have horizontal openings through which pass the shaft, and also vertical. openings within which are secured the stemsj" of the colter-frames F. By means of this casting the colter-frames may be adjusted both laterally and vertically upon the shaft F, and, as the vertical portions of said castings are located to the front and rear of the shaft, the colters F will be located one in front of the other. It is also desirable to have these rolling colters F" adjusted so that they 4will be at a slight angle with respect to the lnain frame, so that they will throw the earth inwardly over the furrow, to cover the seed which is dropped through the seed-spouts. These colters are each provided on their sides adjacent to the seed-spouts with sc1apersj",which project toward the rear edge ofthe same.
The colters hereinbefore described may be adjusted vertically, to enter the ground at a greater or less depth, as well as laterally, upon their supporting-shafts at opposing angles, so that they may gather and throw the desired amount of earth over the seed.
It will be noted by the means hereinbefore described that a furrow is tirst made, and the earth pulverized and packed adjacent to said furrow,and thatafter theseed has been dropped in said furrow the colters will gather the earth and cover the seed, leaving the earth unpacked, so that excessive moisture will not be retained by the earth where the seeds are planted, said colters making furrows adjacent to the pulverized or packed earth between which the seeds are located.
G refers to converging supporting bars, which carry at their upperends bearing-plates g for the horizontal shaft IL of agrooved wheel, H, which is rotated by the check-row cord. The lower portions of the converging bars G have outwardlyprojecting feet, which are rigidly secured to the longitudinal bars (t and a ofthe main frame. The wheel H, which is attached to the' shaft 71 is provided at its periphery with a groove, within which lies the operating-cord, and said wheel may be readily removed from said shaft by loosening the nut adjacent to the hub, so that a wheel of larger or smaller diametel may be attached thereto. The converging bars G G carry at about their central portions forwardly-projecting arms J, said arms having pivoted at their forward ends bars J', the lower ends of which are bifurcated for the reception of anti-friction rollersj, while the upper ends are slotted for the reception of the ends of the arms i, which project laterally from the sides of the yoke I. It will be readily seen that when the wheel H is rotated the roller z', which is carried by the end of the crank-arm, will abut against the sides of the yoke, so as to cause the pivoted arms J to oseillate, said arms reciprocating the seed-slides. The seed-slides K K are independent of each other, and are provided at their inner ends with plates k, which are adj ustably attached thereto, said plates being provided with upwardly-projecting pins k', against which the anti-friction rollers j strike.
L refers to plates which are provided at their inner ends with a bracket, which embraces the upper edge and outer side of the longitudinal beams a and a', where they are bolted thereto, said plates serving as a means for supporting the seedboxes M and their slides. These plates L are provided near their rear edges with slots or openings l, immediately in front of which are located openings Z', through which the seed passes. Adjacent to this opening Z the plates Lare provid-ed on their under sides with depending portion l, which will prevent the seed finding its way through the opening at the rear end of the spout, and it also serves as a stop against which the valve in the seedspout will abut.
The upper portion of the plate L has a perfectly-plain surface, and adjacent to the perforations Z3 therein are located perforated blocks, through which pass bolts, holding in place plates N, each of which is provided with two openings, a, through which the seed will pass to the seed-slide K. Between these openings the plate N has a central raised wall, beneath which is pivotally secured a block, N', which is slot-ted centrally, and is held in place by a pin, n, which passes through said slots and bears upon t-he side plate, N, as fully shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Above this block N, within the recess formed in the transverse wall N, is located a rubber block or spring, n, which serves to bear the slotted block N firmly upon the seed-slide, so that the seed cannot find its way under the saine.
The seed-slide K is provided adjacent to the opening through which the seed passes with sliding plates m m, which can be adjusted so as to increase or diminish the size of the openings therein, and said plate is also provided at its rear side with the projecting portion O,
lhaving an irregularly-shaped slot, o, within which the anti-friction roller o', upon the upper end of the valve O', will play, said valve being opened and closed by the reciprocation of the seed-slides, so as to drop the grain at the proper time, and also prevent the ends of the spouts O becoming clogged. The spouts O" have attached at their upper ends a plate through which pass bolts o for securing them to the under side of the plate L.
As above stated, the ends of the rear crossbeain, a, are beveled, and adjacent to said ends are attached straps p p, which are also secured to the beveled ends of bars P, thus forming a hinge-joint, by means of which the bars P may be tilted upward,and when folded down will be held in a horizontal position.

The ends of the bars P have attached thereto castings Q with pulleys q q. This casting Q, at its front and rear ends, is provided with upwardly-extending port-ions q,to one ot' which an open plate, R, is hinged, the opposite end of said plate being provided with a catch to hold the same in position. The cord K passes from the wheel H between these portions, and from thence to the front or rear of the planter, as may be desired. The bar P also carries spring angle-bar or tension-plate S, which is pivotally attached to a support, s, having a spring attached thereto, which is curved so that the free end will bear upon the bearing s andforce the same upon the-plate r of the casting Q, thus causing the springbearing to clamp the cord.
The upper portion ofthe angle-bar S is provided with a pertoration,through which passes a tieXible connection, t, the opposite end ot said connection being attached to a cross-bar, t. located on the end of a shaft, T, which is secured to the main frame. This shaft has a foot-lever, u, against which it abuts. When n the planter is in operation, this lever is held normally depressed, so as to hold the bearing s elevated, and when it is desired that the check-row cord shouldbe clamped the lever is released.
W refers to supplemental tires, which can Y be attached over the tires of thewheels D D,
and are held thereon by spring-plates w,. or, if desirable, they may be secured by bolts or other fastening devices, as shown in Fig. l0. These tires W' are for the purpose of reducing the depth of the V-shaped projecting portions ot' the Wheels D D.
y By the device hereinbefore described I am enabled to plant the seeds with regularity and ease, and can readily stop the operation of the planter, and by providing the main frame with an adjustable tongue the depth which the colter or coverers will enter the ground can be regulated.
In connection with the apparatus hereinbefore described I use an anchor-plate, as shown in Fig. 8, which has attached to-its'base-plate a downwardly-projecting pin, y, on one side and an upwardly-projecting block, y, on the other side, with an overlapping tongue, which serves to hold in place the 'pivoted clamp yi, which has a depending bent arm, to which the check-row cord is attached, as shown, so that said handle will turn when the planter is turned to loosen itself while turning. This anchor-plate is held securely in position by the removable pin yt, as shown. The operation and use ot" this anchor-plate will be t'ully understood by reference to Fig. l ot' the ,'draw- The tension-frame Sis for the purpose of clamping and holding the check-row cord against movement when desired, as when the anchor is loosened to turn the apparatus the tension can be set to hold the hill, so that it will drop or checkin squares both ways across the field. `This tension 4device will prevent the cord from slipping on wheel H, and the wheel may turn back or forth without loosing the hill or desired point held by the tension.
It will be readily observed that when the check-row planter is 'turned the lever of the anchor to Which the cord is attached will swing out ofthe recess in the anchor-plate itself while turning.
I claim- 1. In combination with the Wheels D, a detachable tire or rim which is adapted to be attached over the horizontal projecting side portions of the supporting-wheels adjacent to the central projecting V-shaped portion thereof, substantially as shown.
2. In combination with a check-row planter, a cast-in g, Q, having pulleys q q attached thereto, a covering-frame, R, hinged to the casting at one end, and provided with a clamp at the opposite end, substantially as shown.
3. In a check-row planter, the open-sided supports having pivotally attached thereto angle-bars S, having bars s, springs for depressing said angle-bar and connections t, attached to a rock-shaft for elevating the same, substantially as shown. l 4. In combination With the seed-slides K, having upwardlyprojecting pins la', .the pivoted bars J,attached to 4an oscillating yoke, a Wheel, H,with crank-shaft which rotates within said yoke, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In combination With the reciprocating seed-slides having horizontal projecting portions O O extendingfrom the rear edge thereof, and provided with irregular-shaped slots o o therein, a valve, O', provided at its upper end with an anti-friction roller, o', which lies within the slots,said valve being pivoted within the seed-spout so as to form the rear wall thereof, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a check-row seed-planter, an angular supporting-frame provided atY its upper end with journals, a shaft, h, carrying at one end a grooved wheel, around which passes the check-row cord, crossed on the underside ofthe wheel,and at the other end a crankar1n,a yoke pivotally attached to the supporting-frame by means of arms J', each of said arms engaging with the independent seed-slides, so as to reciprocate the same when the wheel is rotated, substantially as shown.
7. In combination with the supporting-bars G, a grooved Wheel, H, journaled thereon, the shaft h, having a crank-arm, h', and roller t, the yoke Lwith side projecting arms, 1l, pivoted bars J', pivotally attached to the yoke, and provided at their lower ends with antfriction rollers j, which engage with projecting pins attached -to the seed-slides, substantially as shown,and for the purpose set forth.
