SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,261, dated Qete'cer 19, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM. T. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iVindow Catches and Locks;

and I do declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains toinake and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and use fulimprovementsin window catches and locks, the object of the samebeing to provide a means whereby the upper and lower sashes can be adjusted independent of each other, said sashes being held in position by a rod which is fixed to the window-frame. Said rod passes through a keeper attached to one of the sashes, the other sash being provided with a catch for engaging with said depending rod.

My invention also consists in combining, with a rod having a vertical serrated edge and perforations, a spring-catch attached to the upper sash that may engage with said serrations, and in providing the lower sash with a spring-catch which engages with perforations in said rod, and providing said spring-catches with a cord for operating the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a casing which is attached to the upper portion of the window-frame for holding the depending rod in position. The depending bar 0, hereinbcfore referred to, preferably consists of a flat bar of metal, and it is provided on one side with a series of angular serrations, c c, with which the catch attached to the upper part of the sash D engage. The catch F, as shown in Fig. 4. of the accompany ing drawings, consists of a metallic housing, which is struck up of a single piece of sheet metal, so as to provide a guideway, 1'', through which the rod (J will pass, and adjacent to this guideway a recess, r is formed, within which the spring-catch y will lie, said catch being forced against the edge of the bar 0 by means of a spiral spring, 9, which bears against a shoulder formed thereon and the end of the housing. The stem of the spring-catch g passes through a perforation, f, as shown. The housing E is secured to the top bar of the upper sash by means of screws which pass through perforations in the flanges thereof, and the spring-catch is provided with aknob for throwing the same in and out of engagement with the serrated portion of the depending bar 0.

The upperrail of the lower sash has attached thereto an ordinary spring-catch, F, which is adapted to engage with the perforations e of the bar 0. The lower rail of the upper sash is recessed, so that the end of the bar 0 may lie within said recess when the upper sash is raised.

For the purpose of conveniently operating the spring-bolts, the upper sash, near one ofits corners, is provided with an eye, 71, through which passes the cord, one end of said cord being attached to the knob of the upper springbolt, while the opposite end is attached to the knob of thelower spring-bolt. Thus by grasping and pullingvupon said cord in an upperdirection, these bolts may be released, so as to be thrown out of engagement with the serrations or perforations in the depending bar 0.

By means of the device hereinbefore described sashweights are entirely dispensed with, and said sashes can be adjusted independently of each other and held in position by a bar affixed to the window-frame.

I claim- 1'. The combination of a window-frame having a dependingbar, O, with a serrated edge and a perforated central portionattached thereto, a spring-catch embracing said bar and attached to the upper edge of the upper sash, so as to engage with a serratedportion, and a spring-catch attached to the upper rail of the lower sash to engage with the perforated portion of said bar, whereby the sash-frame can be adjusted independent of each other, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a window-frame, a

depending bar having a slotted iipper end, whereby it is attached to a plate secured to the window-frame, said bar having a serrated edge and centrahperforated portion, a plate, E, attached to the upper sash-frame, so as to embrace said bar, and provided with a springbolt, and a spring-catch, F, attached to the lower sash, substantially as shown; and for the purpose set forth.
