Description

(No ModeL) O. A. SHERMAN.
GUN CLEANER. No. 350,847. Patented Oct. 12, 1886.
Untrnn STATES PATENT OFFICEO CLARANCE AGUSTAS SHERMAN, OF STEVENS I OINT, \VISCONSIN.
GUN-CLEANER.
Application filed June 25, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARANCE AGUS'IAS SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stevens Point, in the county of Portage and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun- Oleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in gun-barrel wipers or cleaners, having for its object to adapt the same to vary ing sizes of barrels, and to prevent the accidental detachment of the rag or wiper proper from. the clamp or ferrule within the barrel; and the invention consists of the detailed con struction of the ferrule or clamp which secures or connects the rag or wiper proper upon the staff or handle with which the device is nianipulated or operated, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a: a: of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the lines y 1/ and respectively, of Fig! 'l.
In carrying out my invention I employ a staff or handle, to one end of which a cylindrical clamp, A, is suitablysecurcd, the clamp having a rag or fabric of suitable size and texture wound thereon. This ferrule or clamp is provided with a number of longitudinal slits or narrow slots, a (1, severing or dividing up the same into a series of segments extending from one end to about three-fourths of its length, whereby it is possessed of sufiicient elasticity to permit of the compression on one (the larger) end of the same, the reaction or dilation of which, as the wiper or cleaner is manipulated within the barrel, serves to thoroughly clean the inside of said barrel, as will readily be understood.
The ferrule or clamp A is provided upon its 'P1";(iii-H.753.IICDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,847, dated October 12,1886.
Serial No. 206,232. (No model.)
outer enlarged or slitted surface with a series of concentric beveled ridges or ribs, 1) b, which increase in diameter toward the outer end of the clamp, the innersurfaces or bases of which are perpendicular to the circumference of the ferrule or clamp, whereby the rag or wiper proper, placed around the ferrule or clamp upon said ribs, will, with the aid of the react-ion or dilation of the segments or enlarged slitted end of the ferrule or clamp after compression and insertion into the guirbarrel, effect the retention of the rag thereon as against leaving or accidentally getting off the same. This device, it would also be seen, is, by reason of its compressibility, adapted to suit gunbarrels of varying sizes, and is capable of insertion into the gun-barrel from the breech or muzzle, either whether the. former be of less area than the latter or not, while it effects the thorough cleaning of the barrel.
I am aware that it is not new to extract cartridge-shells from guns and like instruments by means of an extractor having longitudinal grooves and even peripheral ribs, the latter adapted to be forced against the inner walls of the cartridge by driving the extractor upon a wedge dropped into the cartridgeshell.
XVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a gun-barrel wiper or cleaner, a ferrule or cylindrical clamp having a series of longitudinal slits dividing one end thereof into a series of segments, the outer surfaces of which are provided with a series of circumferential ribs or ridges of normally-increasing diameter, the opposite end of the clamp having means for securing a handle thereto, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLARANCE AGUS'IAS SHERMAN. \Vi tnesses:
ROBERT A. DUNAVEN, A. GLovER.
