Description

PATBNTED APR. 22, 1862.

Illlll P BOISSET BOT 0R SHOE.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

vPIERRE BOISSET, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO IIIMSELF AND BER- NAR-DO ANTOGNINI.

IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS OR SHOES.

Speeieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,057, dated April 22, 1362.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PIERRE BorssEr, of Paris, in the Empire of France, hayeinvented a new and useful Improvement in Boots or Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being,I had to the accompanying,` drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure I represents a top view ot a shoe or boot sole, and Fig. II is a section of the same.

The nature of my invention. consists in the combination, with caoutchouc soles for boots or shoes, of a metal piece or pieces pierced with a suitable thread-hole for the reception of screws by which the ul'iper-leather and inner soles are seeurel y fastened to the caoutchouc soles.

In the application. of india-rubber orguitapereha soles as a substitute for leather soles to boots or shoes the greatest difficulty has existed heretofore in attachingI said soles irml y to the upper-leather or Vamps. Screws have been used Ator this purpose, but trointhe nature of the caoutchouc itis'very diilicult to Amake the thread ot" the Screws hold firmly in this material, and after a very little use the screw will easily pull out ol.' the same.

In the accompanyine` drawings, A relrn'esents the shank and heel ot a sole made ol' caoutchouc, on. the forward end o'l which a leather sole, l, may be attached, or the whole sole may be made ol caoutchouc, it desirable. (I represents the upper-leather or Vamps, which is turned in. between the outerorcaoutchoue sole, A, and the inner sole, l).

In the caoutchouc sole A small metal pieces uy are incorporated during the process ot' mal:- iup` said sole. These metal pieces o are provided with a suitable hole in which a screw thread is eut corresponding with the thread of the screws to be used.

The inner sole, D, and the upper-leather C are attached to the caoutchouc sole A by nieans of any desired number of screws s, screwed through that part ot the caoutchouc situated above the metal pieces and then into these metal pieces a, by which the screws will be prevented frein pulling out, and which will hold the saine firm andvfast, similar to a nut.

Instead of small metal pieces being incorporated with the sole, as above described, a plate provided with the desired number of holes with screw-threads cut in may be ineorpoi-ated therein 5 but I prefer the use of small pieces, as the weight is thereby not considerably increased.

I am aware that screws have been used before for the purpose attaching the inner sole and upper-leather to the outer soles made of caoutchouc or its equivalent, said screws haying, been screwed into the sole, and do therefore not claim the use of screws for the purpose ot' attaching the upper-leather to caoutchouc soles; but

lYhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by .Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a plate or nut, o, when the same embedded or incorporated within the .india-rubber or caoutchouc solo while being made, of a screw so arranged and operating` in connection with said plate as to allow ot the sole beingr screwed up and fastened to the upper-leather, substantially in the manner and vfor the purpose speeiiied.

PIERRE ABOISSE'I.
