UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND T. PHELAN, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,318, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed June 9, 1886. Serial No. 204. 598. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND T. PHELAN, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new 5 and useful Improvement in Book-0utting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the blocks of allround book-cutting machines, and has for its object to render such blocks expansible, so as to accommodate books of different sizes without building upon or otherwise altering or adding to the blocks.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the block of a book-cutting machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 00, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the under side of the expansive block.
A represents the bed of the machine, 13 the frame, and O the screw, all constructed substantially as usual.
D is the central portion of the main portion D of the block-that is, that portion which is stationary horizontally-said block being raised and lowered in the ordinary manner by the screw G for pressing the books E upon the bed A for the purpose of allowing their edges to be cut or trimmed by means of a knife, F, (see Fig. 2,) operated by a portion of the cuttingmachine not shown in the drawings, but constructed in the ordinary manner.
H H are slides, triangular in shape, sliding by means of the dovetails H in the dovetail grooves D" in the portion D of the block. ,Tl1ese slides H are operated by the right-andleft screw I, which lies in the threaded up- The screw may be turned by means of the hand-wheels I or by a socket -wrench applied to its end.
the threaded uprights K, secured to said slides. The screws may be turned by means of the hand-wheels K or by a socket-wrench applied to their ends.
The portion D of the block is chambered out at D in order to accommodate the screw I and its supports, and is slotted at D to accommodate the uprights K. When a book is placed under the block to be cut or trimmed, the slides H are moved by means of the screw I to the point to which the front edges of the books are to be cut, and the slidesK are moved by means of the screws L to the points to which the upper and lower edges are to be cut, and the cutting-machine operated in the ordinary manner. Thus it will be seen that the portion D and the slides H K constitute an expansive block capable of holding and covering books of various sizes for cutting.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a block for book-cutting machines, the combination of the portion D, provided with the grooves D D and chambers D, the triangular slides H, provided with the dovetails H, uprights H, and rightand-left screw I, and the triangular slides K, provided with the dovetails K, uprights K, and right-and-left screws L, substantially as and for the purpose described.
EDMUND T. PHELAN.
