T001. HOLDER. No. 349,923. Patented Sept. 28, 1886.
UNiTE TATES PATENT Price..
JOHN CRABTREE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,923, dated September 28, 1886.
Serial No. 183,626. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that l, JOHN CRABTREE, acitizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have inVent-ed a new and useful Improvement in Tools and Tool-Holders, which improveinent is fully set forth in the following speeifioation and accompanying drawings, in which i Figure 1 represents a partial plan View and partial horizontal section of a tool and toolholder enibodying iny invention. Fig. 2 represents an end view thereof, the holder being at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of a modification thereof. Pig-1 represents a Vertical section of a portion of such modification., Fig. 5 represents a side View of another modification thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to iniproveinents in tool-holders, and it consists in eonstructing the same with an opening which is diagonal in direction both longitudinally and laterally, as hereinafter deseribed, whereby the said holder is readily adapted to the adjustnient and desired operation of the tool.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tool-stock constructed of a bar of iron o r steel, which is of angular form in cross-section, and adapted to be titted in a tool-post or o thensuit able support in a lathe or .other machine for cutting, boring, or other working purposes.
B represents a tool, which is formed of round steel and fitied in a circular opening, O, in the bar or holder A, said tool being secured to the stock by means of a set-screw, D, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, or a gib, D', and wedge D2, as in Figs. 3 and 4,- it being notioed that the opening, and consequently the tool, extends in a moved therefroni in a most convenient manner.
W'hen the tool is dull or broken, it may be displaced and sharpened or repaired without dist-urbing the stock or post, this being a great convenience to the workinan. Furtherniore, when the tool is worn out or irreparable, it being coniparatively a short piece, the loss is slight, the holder remaining intact and readily permitting the application of a fresh tool.
The circular opening in the holder adapts the tool to be turned as desired, in order to set the point of the tool relatively to the work to be accomplished.
Owing to the diagonal arrangement both longitudinally and laterally of the opening in the holder, the tool is tightly retained therein and firmly withstands the thrust to which it is subjected when in use.
Having' thus descrihed niy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The stock A, of angular form in cross-section, having an opening, O, therein, said opening extending diagonally both longitudinally and laterally, being eircnlar in horizontal section, .a .roundiool inserted in said holder, and fastening devices seouring said tool, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN ORABTREE.
