UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. REED, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
IRON MARI NE VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,857, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed March 3, 1885.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. REED, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the construction of Iron Marine Vessels, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of the invention is to prevent water from leaking into the vessel through any break in the sleeve of the shaft of the propelling-screw.
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of a portion of the stern of an iron vessel", showing the application of the invention thereto; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 3/ y, Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A, Fig. 1, designates the keel of the vessel wit-h the hull rising therefrom, and shown in dotted lines.
D is the shaft of the propeller-wheel, and O is the sleeve thereof. The sleeve has at its outer end the journal-box E for the shaft to turn in, and at its inner end the stuffing-box (Z to prevent water penetrating inward between the shaft and the sleeve.
F is a casing, preferably of metal, surrounding the sleeve, and having its ends ff closely fitting and firmly secured upon the journalbox E and stuffing-box d, respectively. The
Serial No. 157.613. (No model.)
casing is preferably of the shape shown in the drawings, there being considerable space, c, be tween it and the sleeve.
Should the shaft break within the sleeve,
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim is In an iron marine vessel, the combination, with the propeller-shaft and the sleeve there of having a journal-box at its outer end to accommodate the shaft and a stuffing-box at its inner end to prevent the entrance of water between the shaft and sleeve, of a casing, F, having its outer and inner ends secured water-tight upon the journal-box and the stuffing-box, respectively, and having considerable space between its interior surface and the exterior surface of the shaft-sleeve box, for
the purpose specified.
. ROBERT A. REED.
