NITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
W'ARREN C. FAGIJLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 349.838. dated September 28, 1886.
Application tiled March 30, 1886. Serial No. 197,163. (Model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN C. FAGELEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of PhiladelphiaJ and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bags; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
, Figure l is a view of the blank or pattern sheet before it is folded, the dotted lines indicating the lines of folding or creasing. Fig. 2 shows the satchel and square bottom folded before the side flaps of the body or tube are united and pasted, with one side broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, enlarged, of the lower part of the bag, taken on the plane indicated by the dotted line m x of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the bottom of the bag.
This invention relates to the production, in a novel manner, of satchel and square bottom paper bags, as will be fully understood `from the following` description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
My improved method or process of manufacturing paper bags consists in first producing from a sheet of paper the blank or pattern sheet shown by Fig. I of t-he annexed drawings. Suitable machinery will be employed for the purpose.
The dotted marks a a. determine the lines or creases for folding the two side flaps, A A. The dotted line n on the flap A indicates the width of the marginal portion B, which in the finished bag overlaps the edge of the flap A and is pasted to it. The bottom of the bag is produced from the extension or Hap C, which may be of any desired length, and which has tapering ends C O, that encroach somewhat into the lower ends of the flaps A A, and are folded or creased, as indicated by the dotted lines a c I) c d, forming what is known as a Satchel bottom. Vhen this bottom extension of the body of the bag is folded as shown by Figs. 2 and 3, the tapering ends C C thereof form two thicknesses of paper and effeetually close and reenforee the bag at its bottom corners. The bottom extension having been thus folded, the two flaps or sides A A are pasted together along their longitudinal edges, as above described. The marginal portion e of said extension C is then pasted upon the outside of the flaps A A. I thus make the bottom of the bag scamless7 and of but one thickness of paper.
It is obvious from the above description that the Satchel bottom of my improved bag can be made of any desired width, and that the bag will stand alone when unfilled. It will be observed that the blank is of the form of an oblong rectangle extending from the lower edge of which is the flap or portion C, having tapered sides. Fig. lshows the blank with dotted lines indicating the lines of fold. Having prepared this blank I fold the portion C along the line b upon the body portion. I then fold back this portion C upon itself' along the line c. Flap A is then folded over along line a. Flap A is folded on its line a, and the marginal portion B pasted upon the flap A. The marginal portion c of the portion C is folded over the lower edges of the portions A A and pasted thereto, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, which finishes the bag..
Having described my invention, I clain1- l. The method herein described of making satchel and square bottom paper bags, consisting in first producing the blank described, folding the extension C upon the body portion of the blank, then back upon itself, then folding the two sides A A and pasting them together along their longitudinal edges, and finally pasting the marginal portion of said extension upon the outside of the said flaps, as herein specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a paper bag having a seamless satchel and square bottom formed of an extension of the body ofthe bag-blank and provided with reenforcing corner folds, and an outside margin pasted upon the two united side1laps,substan tially as described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVARREN C. FAGELEY.
