SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,823,dated September 28,1886.
Application filed June 25, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SELDoN STRo'rHER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philippi, in the county of Barbour and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Planters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined planters and fertilizer-distributors;
IO and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation I 5 of a planter and fertilizer-distributor embodying my improvement-s. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line a m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line g y of Fig. 8.
A represents a rectangular frame, comprising the side beams, 13, the cross-beam 0, con necting the said side beams near their front ends, and the cross-beam D, connecting the rear ends of the side beams.
E represents aboard, which extends transversely from one side beam to the other in rear of the front cross-beam, O, and the upper side of the said board is grooved longitudinally,
thereby forming channels or ways F. In the said board are made openings G, H, and I,which intersect the channels F, and are in the same transverse line. On the under side of the board E is secured a depending spout, K, the upper end of which is broader than its lower or dis charge end, the said upper end of the spout communicating with the openings G, H, and I.
L represents a series of seed-slides, which fit in the ways F, and are provided each with an opening, L, which is adapted to register with one of the openings in the board E at each forward and back movement of the slide. 'Ihese slides are connected to each other at their rear ends by a plate, M, which is provided with a 4 5 rearward extending ear, M.
To the under sides of the beams B, at the rear ends thereof, are bolted brackets N, in which is journaled a transverse rotating shaft, 0. The center of the said shaft is provided with Serial No. 206,953.

A set-screw, V, passes through the front side of the said beam, and engages the said rod or standard, and is thereby adapted to secure the latter at any desired vertical adjustment.

IV represents a pair of rods or standards, which extend through vertical forwardly-inclined openings that are made in the beam D. Set screws WV are secured in the said beam, and bear against the said rods or standards, and thus serve to secure the latter at any desired vertical adjustment. To the lower ends of the rods or standards IV are pivoted cov 8o ering shovels or plows XV which are connected to the depending arms S of the rock-shaft S, by means of rods \V".
X represents a transverse bar, which is secured near the rear end of theframc. 011 the said bar is fulcrumed a lever, X, the upper end of which is connected to the ear M of the slides L, by means of a connecting-rod, Y. The lower end of the said lever X is connect ed to an eccentric-strap, X with which the 0 eccentric P is provided.
Z represents aspring-bar, which is attached to the beam D of the frame, and carries at its upper end a seat, Z, for the driver.
To the front end of the frame is rigidly at- 5 tached an open ring, a, and to the under side of the said ring a is attached an open ring, I), the latter being provided with a concentric slot, through which pass bolts d, that depend from the ring a. To the front ends 'of the open ring I) are attached depending arms 6, in the lower ends of which is journaled the shaft of a guidingwheel, f. v
9 represents a hopper, which is located on the upper side of the frame A, the said hopper being secured transversely on the said frame, and the bottom of the hopper bearing upon the upper sides of the slides L. This hopper is divided into three compartments, 71., 7c, and t. I11 the bottom of the compartment h are made two openings, h, one in ad- Vance of the other, similar openings, k, being made in the bottom of the compartment k, and similar openings, 1', are made in the bottom of the compartment 73. The said openings h, k, and 1 are in the same longitudinal lines with the openings L of the slides.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The fertilizer is placed in the compartment 2, the corn in the compartment k, and the beans to be planted in the same hills with the corn are placed in the compartment h. As the machine is drawn along across the field, the rotation of the shaft 0 is communicated to the eccentric, causing the latter to vibrate the lever X, and thus reciprocate the slides L under the bottoms of the compartments of the hopper. As the said slides move forwardly, their openings L first register with the rearward openings, h k z", of the compartments of the hopper, thus causing the said openings Lto be filled with fertilizer, corn, and beans. As the'slides continue to move forward, their openings L pass over the openings G, H, and I in the board E, and thus discharge the fertilizer, corn, and beans into the discharge-spout K, through which it is conveyed into the furrow made by the furrowopener. At the forward limit of the movement of the slides their openings register with the openings in the front sides of thebottom of the compartments in the hopper, and are replenished with the fertilizer, corn, and beans therefrom, and on the reverse movement of the said slides, when their openings align with the openings in the board E, the corn,
beans, and fertilizer are again discharged through the spout into the furrow, thus causing the machine to plant the corn, beans, and fertilizer at each forward and rearward movement of the slides, or, in other words, twice In order to raise the furrow-opener and covering-shovels from the ground when the machine is being drawn across the field or along the road, and not in operation, it is only necessary to move the lever S rearwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By vertically adjusting the rods or standards V and VV the furrow-opener and covering-shovels may be caused to work at any desired'adjustment.
By journaling the guiding-wheel f between the arms which depend from the front end of the open turning ring I) the said guidingwheel may be turned so as to cause the machine to be drawn in any desired direction.
A tongue, at, is attached to the depending arms 6, and suitable handles, n, are provided for the rear end of the frame, when it is preferred to direct the latter by a person walking in rear of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- I 1. The combination, in aplanter,of the vertically-adjustable rods or standards, the furrow-opener and covering plows or shovels pivoted thereto, the set-screws bearing against the rods or standards to secure them at any desired adjustment, and the rock-shaft having the hand-lever and connected to the pivoted furrow-opener and covering plows, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a. fertilizer-distributer and seed-planter, of the frame A, the furrow-opener and covering-plows pivoted under the said frame, the rock-shaft S, having the depending arms S and S and the hand-lever S, the said rock-shaft being located between the furrow opener and the covering plows, and the rod connecting the arm S with the pivoted furrow-opener, and the rods connecting the arms S with the pivoted coveringplows, whereby the said furrow opener and coveringplows will be raised or lowered simultaneously by moving the hand -lever S, substantially as described.
