KPPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING CIGARETTE-TUBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent BT01349785, dated September 28, 1886. Application led January 1G, 1886. Serial No. 188,741. (Fo model.) Patented in France August lll, 1885, No, 170,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A NuTOLn EDOUARD DE- COUFL,machine builder, residing at Paris, France, have inventedv an Improved Apparatus for lvlanufacturing Unpasted Cigarette- Tubes,(for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France, dated August 14,1S85,No. 170,686,) of which the following is a specifi-` cation.
The invention hereby sought to be secured by Letters Patent consists in a novel apparatus for manufacturing cigarette paper tubes without the use of any paste or size, and thus avoiding .the inconveniences heretofore met with in the employment of ordinarypasted cigarettes.
The unpasted cigarettetube, which maybe of any length and diameter, is closed along one of its generating-lines by clasps or hooks or by folding or rolling two, three, four, or more thicknesses of paper embodied within each other, in the manner hereinafter fully described.
The improved machine effects a longitudinal fastening by means of a flange or seam, having the shape of ailattened tube, which is formed by the rolling or winding into each other of the two edges of the paper sheet or band; and while this fastening or closing method may be applied outside of the cigarette-tube without departing from the princi- -ple of my invention, yet I much prefer to apply the same internally, as it then affords all the advantages, which chiefly consist in preventing t-he accidental disconnection of the rolled and fiattened edges, from any cause, and rendering any additional closing at the ends of the cigarette-tube unnecessary; but the means I have devised for the manufacture of my cigarette-tubes with internal longitudinal fastening will be readily understood by the inspection of the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2a plan view, of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, whereby the inner ar rangement of the apparatus may be understood; and Figs. 4L to 9are cross-sections taken on the lines 4 4, 5 5, to 9 9, respectively. Figs. 10 to 12 are sections of the paper tubey in its progressive stages.
p is a paper band, the width of which corresponds to the size of the complete tube when unwound, including of course the parts that are to be taken up by the yjoint obtained by rolling the edges within each other. The paper p, wound upon roller P, is first directed between Vguide-rolls (ra/one of which, (l, has a curved couvexgenerati'ng-l i ne,an'd the other, c', a correlative concave curvc. From thence itV will at once enter a curvilinear convergent channel, i), which causes the edges of the pa- -per band gradually to rise and then tobe bent down inward at the extreme end of the channel, thus assuming in section the shape indicated in Fig. 10. The turning down of the edges :I: x is caused in the first place by the outline of the channel, which itself is imperceptibly and gradually turned down, and in the second place by the portion c, which is entirely closed, and forms a sequel of the channel, a rib, c', being fitted' therein, as shown in Fig. 7, which, as aforesaid, is a section on lline 7 7. The tube th us prepared is supported by a stem or rod, d, concentric with the forming mechanism, and is only released thereby when completed. The tubularpartc only ends when the two edges of the paper x w' are entirely turned down, as shown in Fig. 11. At that instant the inner projections, :v w', enter a truncated cone-shaped funnel, e, which may or may not be wound `spirally. Within this device the paper edges are rolled together, so as to form a spiral, x, as shown in Fig. 12.
Funnel e is arranged Within a hollow provided for the purpose in the rod d, so that the Whole of the device is limited by the periphery of said rod d, as shown in Fig. 8, which isa section on line S S, Fig. 1, as aforesaid. Beyond funnel e spiral x is flattened in the middle by a roll, g, turning within a hollow, f, cut lengthwise in rod (Land being V-shaped, as shown in Fig. 9. The roll g is hung in the lower part of a stem, which is surrounded by a spring, as shown in Fig. 3. The fold made by the spring-pressure of roll g remains unchanged until the paper 'reaches the pulling devices, which simultaneously complete the fastening, These devices comprise a grooved roller, h, under which a small Wheel, m, with a plain or serrated surface, is located within a recess in rod d, and, lastly, another plain wl1eel,m, is su perposed above the second drawing-roller, 7L. The pressure exerted by roller h and wheel in. upon the squeezed spiral .fr re- IOL) sults in a gofering of the several thicknesses of paper, so that the same are incorporated Within each other and constitute an internal junction fold, which, although of a hardlyperceptiblethiekness, is exceedingly strong. The function of wheel m is to support rod d, in combination with the lower roller, L,-which does not, however, hinder this roller h from assisting the other roller, h, in the feeding operation.
The feeding of the tube-is effected by lengths or half-lengths, or in a continuous manner. In the latter ease-namely, when the feeding is continuous, suitable cutters may be arranged at or near the terminal of rod d for the purpose.
s s s2 s3 s* are the supports of the several parts of which the apparatus consists. They are all, as shown, suitably attached to table t. The said apparatus-may, however, vary in its main parts, according as it is, or is not, in connection with a cigarette-machine.
I have before stated that the pressure of the drawing-roller h and wheel m upon the spiral of the tube, no matter whether the saine is inside or outside, has the effect of incorporating within each other the paper thicknesses inelosed Within said spiral. The paper may, if desired, be used in a moist condition.
