AMAL'GAMATOR.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,779l datedSeptember 28, 1886.
Application ilcd December 29, 1885. Serial No. 187.027.
To all whom it may concern: y
Beit known that I, GEORGE S. ARMSTRONG, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe 5 and State of Colorado, and having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Amalgamators, of which the following is a speciicatiomreference being had. Ic therein to the accompanying. drawings, in`
which similarletters refer to corresponding parts. A f
The object of my improvement .is to provide an amalgamator simple in construction 1 5 and perfect in'its Work, which machine may be used alone or in combination with myimproved concentrator for which I have Obtained Letters Patent of the United States, numbered 327,915, and bearing date October 6, A. D. 2o 1885.
In the drawings,Figure l is an elevated scction of my improved amalgamator, showing the same attached to my concentratonalso showing the propelling mechanism. Fig. 2 is 2 5 a top view oi' the propelling mechanism. Fig. 3 is a crank-wheel forming part of the propelling mechanism. Fig. et is a top View of an attachment `forcrank-Wheel shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sideelevation of my improved 3o amalgamator, showing thel same attached to my concentrator. The propelling mechanism is not shown in this iigure. Fig.v 6 is a front end view of myimproved amalgamator With-v out the propelling mechanism.` Fig. 7 is a 35 rear end view of the same, the door of box A being open. Fig. 8 is a top view of the amalgamating-box.
A is a vertical box with a journal, a, in itsi center upon each of two opposite sides, by 4o means of which journals the box is mounted upon a suitable frame, B. The journals a Work in center boxes, a', said center boxes having a slight horizontal movement Within slotted boxes v ci. The movement of center l 45 boxes, c', within theboxes c2 is controlled by adjusting-bolt d3. lThe boxes a2 are attached to the top of frame B, as shown in the drawings.
(No model.)
Supported within box Al and near its bottom is the copper plate f, coated with mercury, 5o
the same being placed Obliquely Within box A, as shown in Fig. l. Plate f contains receptacles f and f2, which are also lined with copper and coated with mercury. Receptacle f2 contains rifiiesfi 1 5 g is an amalgamating-box, to cach side of which is riveted a bracket, g'.
To each side of box A is riveted or bolted a plate, ai". Brackets g are attached to plates a5 by means of rod g2, as' shown. By this 6o `means the rear end of amalgamating-box g is attached to box A.y The Afront end Of amal- Vgamating-box g is supported by a rod, h, on
each side, which is pivoted to box gat one exn tremity and bolted to the frame B at the other 65 extremity. Rod hmay be so adjusted Where it is attached to frame B as to give amalgamating-box g any desired inclination.
Within amalgamating-box g is placed the screen t', containing the riill'le i. Running 7o crosswise of the bottom of amalga'Inating-box g are the rifes g3. Box g also .contains receptaclesj and j Rcceptaclej contains the rifflesj". Amalgamating-box g is lined with copper, said lining being coated with mercury.
My improved amalgamator is Operatedby means of the propelling mechanism shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4. Zis a driving-pulley, to which a belt may be attached communicating with any suitable motor. v,Pullcyl is attached 8O to shaft on, to which shaft gear-wheel n is also attached. Shaft m is journaled within suitable journal-boxes, m', attached to the frame of the machine, as shown. Gear-Wheel n meshes Within a smallervgear-wheel, n', attached to 85 shaft p. To shaft p is also attached {1y-Wheel q and crankwheel r. Shaft p isl attachedvto the frame of the machine and held in position by journal-boxesp. The construction of crank- Wheel o" is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. r is an ad- 9o justalole plate pivoted to the Wheel 'at the point r2. id is a curved slot, formed within Wheel i', and by means of which slot plate i" is adjusted so as to bring crank r4 at any desired distance from the center lofthe Wheel. 'Plate r', when 95 properly adjusted, is held in position byl set- 3o with screenz, back of riiile i.
1o will be readily observed. rlhe material to be treated, together with the water required for the purpose, is discharged upon plate f.
Vhen used in connection with my improved concentrator, the material passes directly from r the last riffled plate ofthe concentrator to plate fof the amalgamator. Vhen the amalgamator is used alone, box A contains no riftled plates, and the material is discharged into the top of box A, falling directly upon plate f of my im- 23 proved amalgamator.
By reason of the combined oscillatory and horizontal movement of box A, as above de scribed, the heavier and coarser particles of precious metal discharged upon plate f are reg 25 tained within receptacles f andfl, where they form an amalgam with the mercury, while the lighter particles of gold or silver with the crude material are discharged from plate f into amalgamating-box g, rst coming in contact The object of riflie i is to retain the material so discharged upon the rear portion of said screen until the greater part of the precious metal has passed through the screen into receptacle j beneath.
3 5 By virtue of the motion of amalgamating-box g the heavier particles of precious metal have a tendency to remain in the rear portion of box g, While the lightest particles of valuable metal, together with the crude material, pass over rifiie 4o fi and pass toward the forward extremity of the box, the precious metal passing through the screen during this process'into the bottom of box t(/,where it is retained by riffles g3 and receptacle j, forming an amalgam with the mercury with which the copper `lining of box g is coated, as aforesaid, while the crude material is discharged from the forward extremity of box g, having been first deprived of all its valuable metal, in the manner described.
My improved amalgamator may be attached to my improved concentrator patented as aforesaid, or box A may contain only plate f, with which the material to be treated rst comes in contact.
Box A may be dispensed with and a suitable frame'substitute'd therefor, to which frame pitman-rod s and amalgamating-box g must be attached, as described, the object being to form a suitable medium of communicating the motion of the propelling mechanism to box g. This frame of box, whiehever is used, should be journaled as box A, herein described, and should also be fashioned to receive plate f in its lower portion, as shown.
The propelling mechanism is the same as that used in my improved eoncentrator, and I therefore claim nothing on the same except in combination with the other elements of my amalgamator.
Box A contains a door, b, which may be opened for the purpose of cleaning plate f or removing the amalgam therefrom. Door b may be opened or taken out by removing keys b', there being one on each side.
Amalgamatingbox g contains a door, c, in its rear end, which opens downward, lgiving free access to receptacle j when it is desired to remove the amalgam therefrom.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an amalgamator, the combination v of amalgamating-box g, provided with receptacles j and j', rifties g3, screen i, provided with riflie i and door c, said box being supported by rods h and brackets g', a suitable frame providedwith boxes a2 and a', box A, provided with journals a, and mechanism for operating the machine, consisting of gear-Wheels n and n, shaft p, crank-wheel 1', and pitman-rod s, substantially as described.
. 2. In an amalgamator, the combination of a supporting-frame provided withj ournal-boxes, box A, plate f, containing receptacles f and f2, amalgamating-box g, provided with screen i, receptacles j and j', and rifies g3, box g being attached to box A., and supported by adjusting-rods h, and mechanism for operating the machine, consisting of gear-wheels n and n', erankwheel r, Shaft p, and pitman-rod s, substantially as described.
IOO
3. In an amalgamator, the combination of a supporting-frame provided with boxes a and a box A provided with journals a, plate provided with receptacles f and f2, amalgamating-box g, provided with screen z', receptacles j and j', rifiles g, and door c, box g being attached to box A and supported by adjusting-rods h, and suitable mechanism for operating the maehine, substantially as described.
