(No'modelJ new and useful Improvements in Channeling- Machines forCoal, Stone, &c. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe inventioml'eference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 8 is an inverted bottom view; and Fig. 4 is a vertical detail section enlarged.
My invention has for its object to provide a machine primarily designed to be operated by hand, and to be used for the purpose of channeling coal, stone, and other materials usually obtained by mining or quarrying.
Heretofore the operations ofmining and quarrying have been usually effected by means of a pick manually used, or by drills operated by steam or other mechanical power. The pick requires skill for its effective use and is slow and difficult in operation, while power Inachinery is expensive and usually cumbrous.
My invention aims to provide a device which .will require only the same power as the pick,
but can be operated by unskilled labor, and will do a much larger amount of work than a pick will in the same time. My invention, accordingly, provides a machine which is the miners friend in that it increases the production by his hands, while lessening his laborious efforts; and it is also an efficient auxiliary out deepens, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,A designates the base or bed-piece of the machine, which may bea casting, either gray or malleable iron or steel, or it may be wholly or part- 1y of wood. Said base is oblong in form, having two side bars, a a, and two end pieces, a? a leaving a central longitudinal slot or opening, B. 0 represents a carriage or slide designed and adapted to traverse said slot, said slide having grooved sideswhieh move upon the inner edges of the side bars, a a, the latter serving as guides or ways. To the forward end of the slide is adjustably secured an extension, D, consisting of a bar supported in keepers or lugs (1 (Lou the under side of the-bed A, so that the slide and its extension will move together. On the slide extension D there is a cross-head, E, composed of two plates, E E, between which arepulleyse c. The slide Chas a central standard, F, which affords bearings for a vertical shaft,G, and it has a bifurcated head, F,which sustains. a shaft, H, from which, through. the medium of bevel-gears g h, motion is eo1nmunicated to said shaft G. Shaft H is provided with two crank-handles or Wrenches, h h, by which it is turned; or power may be applied from asteam or other engine or electric motor to secure the revolution of said shaft. On the lower end of shaftG there is made fast a pulley, I, over which and the pulleys e e a chain-saw, K,or other flexible cutter runs. K is a guard plate to keep said cutter on the pulley I. Said shaft G has also a worm, G, which meshes with a worm-wheel, l, on a transverse shaft, L, having its bearings in a box, Z, on the base of slide 0. Said shaft L carries a pinion, M, which meshes with a rack, N, sustained on and fastened to the bedpiece A. This pinion M is normally loose on shaft L, but rests between two friction-collars, O O,
which are secured on said shaft L, so as to always move therewith. The inner collar, 0, is stationary on shaft L, but the outer collar, 0, is movable laterally or axially on said shaft, so as to clamp said pinion M with more or less friction between both collars, a thumbmut, 0,
being provided to move said collar 0. By varying the pressure the frictionvmay be increased or lessened, this construction thus forming an adjustable friction-feed for the slide, its extension, and the cutting device. If the pinion M be left loose on shaft L, when the shaft H is turned the cutter will run without I feeding forward. If said pinion be clamped between the c0llars,it will turn with them, and, by reason of its engagement with the rack N, cause the slide 0 to be moved forwardly, carrying with it the extension D and the cutting saw chain or too]. By adjusting the friction the feed may be varied-that is, increased or lessened in speed-and the friction may be so graduated that in case the cutter meet-s with an usually hard projection the feeding motion will be stopped or suspended, the pinion M slipping on its shaft as long as the resistance to the feed or advance of the .cutter is more powerfulthan the friction of the feed-clutch. The base A is supported on feet p p, which may consist of adj ustable screw-pins or pointed bolts, which rest on the ground or floor of a mine when the machine is in use and placed horizontally. WVhen so placed, the miner or operator sits on the rear end of the machine and works the cranks with his hands, advancing his position on the bed-piece as the feed progresses, the machine being bodily moved in a lateral direction after it cuts in as deeply.

To permit the handles to be readily and conveniently turned when the machine is shearing,the upper part, F, of the standard F should be swiveled on the lower part, F", and be turned around, so as to cause said handles, when turned, to move in planes transverse to the length of the machine, said upper part being made fast by set-screws f f, as shown in the drawings.
To permit the saw-chain or cutting device to be put on and taken off the pulleys, the nuts on the bolts (1' d, which pass through slots d in the extension D and fasten said extensionto the slide, are first loosened to permit the extension to be moved back on the slide. After the chain-saw is put on,the extension is moved forwardly onthe slide until the requisite tension of the chainsaw is secured, and the nuts are then tightened on their bolts.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The eombinatiominamining-machine, of a bed-piece of oblong form having a central longitudinal slot and a rack located on its upper surface, a carriage arranged to slide in said slot and having an extension which carries pinions or sprocket-wheels at its forward end, a pulley-wheel supported by said carriage, a toothed chain which passes around said pulley, and a pulley or pulleys onsaid extension, a

and pinions engaging, respectively, with said worm and with the rack on the bed-piece, and mechanism. substantially as described, for imparting motion to the power-shaft, and thereby operating the cutting and feeding mechanism, as set forth.
2. In a mining-machine, the combination, with thebed'pieee and a traveling carriage or frame supported thereon and carrying a toothed-chain cutter, of a rack mounted on said bed-piece, and mechanism for imparting motion to the cutter and feeding the same forward, said mechanism comprising a pinion secured to its moving shaft by means of a collar, 0, rigidly secured to said shaft-,a movable collar, O, and a thumb-nut, 0, constituting a frictional clamp for said pinion, the latter cngaging with said rack and receiving motion from the power-shaft of the machine, substantially as described.
3. Ihe combination, with base or bed piece A, having central longitudinal slot B, of carriage or slide G,which moves in said slot, pulley I, attached to said slide, and extension D, also secured to said slide and having at its forward end a cross-head orbearing,E, for pulleys c c, substantially as shown and described.
