HEDGE-TRIMMING ATTACHMENT FOR HARVESTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,595, dated September 21, 1886. Application filed-January 4, 1886. Serial No. 187,542. g (No model.)
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of as much of a harvesting-machine as will illustrate the con-' struction and application 'of my attachment for trimming the tops of hedges. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the attachment detached from the machine. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of a harvestingmachine, showing an attachment for trimming 'the sides of hedges; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the latter attachment detached from the machine.

My invention. has relation to hedge-trimming attachments for harvesting-machines, reapers, or mowers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts constituting the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a. portion of the platform of the harvesting-machine. B is the drive wheel. G is the crank-shaft, and D is the disk having the crank-pin or wrist-pin E at its end.
F is the finger-bar having the shoe G at its inner end.
H is the cutter-bar having the coupling-lips I at its inner end.
J is the coupling-bar, to which the liftingchain K is secured, and L is the thrust-bar, which is normally attached to the inner end of the finger-bar and to the forward portion of the machine-frame.
M is an upright bar having a transverse perforation, N, at its lower end, through which the rear end of the thrust-bar is inserted,said end projecting beyond the upright bar, and being rounded to receive the outer end of the coupling-bar. The upper portion of the upright bar is braced and retained in its upright position by means of a rod, 0, secured to the machine-frame and to the upright. At the middle of the inner side of the upright two lips, P 1, formed upona plate secured to the face of the upright, and a,.lever, Q, is piv oted between these lips, rocking ina plane transverse to the draft of the machine. The upper end of the upright is provided with two upwardlyprojecting bolts, Q Q, by means of which the finger-bar is secured to the top of the upright, and the finger-bar is furthermore braced by means of a brace-rod, S, havingits upper end secured to the finger-bar,while the lower end of thebrace is formed with a longitudinal slot. '1, and with a corrugated or serrated face, U, which bears against a correspond ingly corrugated or serrated face,V, upon the outer side of the upright, which face is provided with a bolt, W, which passes through the slot and .is'provided with a nut, X, by means of which the slotted end may be adj usted, thus adj nsti ng the level of the fi nger-bar.
The upper end of the lever is provided with a short pitman, Y, pivoted to the lever and .pivoted to the coupling-1i ps I of the cutter-bar,
and thelower end of thelever has pivoted thereto apitman"; Z, which is pivoted at its inner end to the wrist-pin of the revolving disk, so that the lever will be rocked when the disk is revolved and the cutter-bar will be rcciprocated at the upper end of the upright, which, by means of the coupling-bar, lifting-chain, and the thrust-bar, may be raised or lowered to the desired height in the same manner as the finger-bar is raised or lowered when operating the harvester for its original purpose.
' In Figs. 3 and 4is shown an attachment for trimming the sides of a hedge, in which the 1 uprightis dispensed with and a block, A, secured movably with its inner end to the rear corner of the machine-frame. The couplingbar is secured to the under side of the outer end of the bar, and the bar or block may in this manner have its outer end raised or lowered at will by the lifting-chain. A flat bar, B, has a clip, 0, at its inner end, which clasps the coupling-bar immediately outside of the place at which it is fastened to the bar, and the outerend of the coupling-bar isv secured by means of a bolt and nut, E, .to the middle of the flat bar, the outer end of which is formed with a perforation or eye, F. The forward end of the thrust-bar is secured to the forward end of the machine-frame and has its rear end passed through the shoe of the finger-bar in the usual manner and through the eye at the outer end of the flat bar, and the finger-bar is held in a vertical position by means of a brace-rod, G, secured to the frame and to the outer portion of the finger-bar. A bracket, H, is secured to the under side of the bar or block, and has two perforated lips, I 1, between which the hollow portion J of a rocking connecting-rod is pivoted, and the outer end of this pitman or lever is pivotally connected to the coupling-lips of the inner end of the cutter-bar. lever is hollow and forms asocket, K, within which the end, L, of a bar, M, slides, the inner end of which bar is pivotally connected to the wrist-pin of the revolving disk. It will be seen that as the disk is revolved the sliding pitman'will rock the lever, which will reciprocate the cutter-bar vertically, and the flat bar secured to the coupling-bar will bring the finger-bar sufficiently to the side to allow the horses in front of the machine to pass freely along the hedge and to bring the finger-bar as close to the hedge as may be desired for trimming it.
The attachment may have small changes made for the purpose ofadapting it to different harvestingmachines, but the principle will remain the same, and all the parts of the harvester are used together with the attach ment, which may be easily secured to the machine, as well as easily removed from the same, when the machine will be inorder forusing it in its proper capacity as a reapingmachine or mower.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1 The inner end of the.
a finger-bar secured to the upper end of the upright and having the cutter-bar sliding in it, a lever pivoted between the lips upon the upright, a pitman pivoted to the upper end of the leverand to the cutter-bar, and a pitman pivoted-tothe lower end of the lever and to the wrist-pin of the drivingdisk, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a hedge-trimming attachment for harvesting-machines, the combination of an upright having a transverse perforation at its lower end, the coupling-bar of the machine inserted through the perforation, the chainbar of the machine secured at its outer end to the rear end of the thrustbar, a lever pivoted between lips at the middle of the inner face of the upright, a finger-bar having a cutterbar sliding in it and having a shoe at its in- .ner end, bolts at the upper end of the-upright, a brace-rod secured to the finger-bar and secured adjustably with its lower end to the outer side of the upright, a brace-rod secured to the machine and to the upright, a pitman secured to the upper end of the lever and to the inner end of the cutter-bar, and a pitman pivoted to the lower end of the lever and to the wrist-pin of the drive-disk, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. In a hedge-trimming attachment for harvesting-machines, the combination of an upright secured to the machine-frame at its lower end, a finger-bar secured at its inner end to the upper end of the upright, projecting laterally, a brace-rod secured at its upper end to the finger-bar and having its lower end slottedand provided with a serrated face, and a serrated plate upon the upright having an outwardly-projecting bolt, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
