APPARATUS FOR STOPPING CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,773, dated September '7, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Brendan RAMSAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Braceville, in the county of Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Stopping Box-Oars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in an apparatus for stopping box-cars atagivcn and required place-a's, for instance, at a coal-shaft, where it is required that the cars to be loaded must be stopped at a certain place every time, so that the apron of the coalchute can be properly entered in the cars through the doorway at the side, and so the apparatus used for distributing coal in cars can be properly entered in the ears through the opposite doorway from the coal-chute.
The construction and operation of this ap paratus is fully set forth and explained int-he following specification and claims, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings,and the letters and figures thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus as it would appear in service stopping a car. Fig. 2 is a detailed view on line as, showing a crosssection of the swinging beam of the apparatus, and also of the sill to which'said beam is pivoted, and a side view of its supporting-arm and the lever and connectingrod for operating the apparatus; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the swing-beam or butter of the apparatus pivotal] y secured to a bed-sill.

S represents a bed-sill securely anchored to the ground at one side of and parallel with the railway-track rails.
B represents a beam or buffer pivotally and firmly secured to sill S, and arranged in an inclined position parallel with and over bedsill S, with its extending free end at a height proper to engage the lower part of the jamb- J of a box-car doorway when swung from its normal position, so as to engage a car.
D represents an arm arranged in a perpendicular position and pivotally secured at its lower end, in box IE, to bed-sill S, and having its upper end bent or formed at about right angles with its perpendicular part and arranged ovcr and pivotally connected with beam or buii'er 3, as shown at G, for the purpose of supporting the free extending end of said beam or buffer, so it can be swung to one side. A chain or red may be used to hang the free end of said beam or buffer in place of the arm 1), where there are conveniences for so doing.
1 represents a platform arranged atone side of beam or buffer B, of proper form and height for an operator to stand upon to operate the apparatus; but the apparatus may, however, be operated from the ground, if so desired.
L represents a hand-lever f ulerumed to platform P, having its free end extending above said platform, and connected at its lower shorter end with beam or buffer B through themedium of aconnecting-rod, R. Saidbeam or buffer is shown as being pivoted at its lower end by a bolt, Z, passing down through it and sill S, and as being hacked and re-enforce'd by a block, F, bolted to said sill; but other substantial means may be employed to pivotally secure said beam or buffer at that end.
By operating lever L the free end of beam or buffer B can be swung from its normal position to one side, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to engage the lower part of the door-j amb J of a box-car when the car reaches the proper place to be stopped.
\Vhen cars which are to be loaded are brought to a coal-shaft, they are run very slow into proper place by holding their brake-shoes close to their wheels, so that when they are stopped by engagement with the beam or buffer B their brake prevents reaction, and the car is brought to a dead stand at the exact place desired.
Vhen the beam or buffer B is not in service it is brought to rest over and parallel with bed-sill S, so as to be out of the way from an approaching'or passing car.
The cars approach their stopping-place from the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, and the apparatus is so arranged as to properly engage their door-jamb when thus properly brought to position; but a duplicate beam or buffer, B, may be used, arranged in a reverse position, so that cars may be stopped when approaching from either direction. Flat cars may be stopped with like effect by engaging them at some convenient part.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to Wit:
1. In an apparatus for stopping boX-cars, the beam or buffer 13, arranged substantially as set forth and pivotally secured to a fixed 1o sill or anchor at its lower end, and adapted to have its free extending end swung'to one side, for the purpose specified.
2. In the apparatus described, the combination,with the beam or buffer B,'of the support 15 ing-arni D and means, substantially as set forth, for operating said beam or buffer, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In the apparatus described, the combination of beam or buffer B and means for sup 2o porting its free extending end with the lever Land connecting-rod R, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In an apparatus for stopping box-cars, the combination of the swinging beam or buffer B, arm D, lever L, and connecting-rod 25 R, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of beam or buffer B, having its lower end pivotally secured to sill S by means of bolt Z, re-enforcing block F, supporting-arm D, lever L, and connectingrod It, arranged to operate to give lateral movement to the free extending end of said beam or buffer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
