The forwardly extending braces 27 are exactly the same as g the side braces, except that the teeth of the with brackets 33, carried by theforward faces is carried by the cross-bar 25, downward and under a sheave, 37 and then forward to apositiou to allow of the hitching of the horse employed to operate the hammer.

- .In operating the machine described it is' drawn to the position where it is desired to drive a post or a. pile. The derrick is then adjusted so that it will extend upward in a vertical line. If desired, the machine could be provided with a measuring or spacing chain, and this chain, after a post has been'drivcn, could be attached thereto and the vehicle moved forward until the chain was taut, from which arrangement it will be understood that the post would be accurately and uniformlyspaced off the distance for each post.
