CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346381, dated August 3.1886

To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL ZEIGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in the Construction of automatic car-couplings, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, showing the two draw-heads coupled. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the same, showing the two heads uncoupled. Fig. 3 is a sec tional plan showing the two heads coupled, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detached perspective views of parts of one of the coupling-heads.
The two draw-heads A A' are counterparts of each other, and each has two arms, a b, leaving a U-shaped recess between them for the reeeption of the arm I of the opposite draw-head. The arm a is hollow for the reception of the pivoted retaining-block D, and I prefer to make the arm of the rounded boxlike form shown in the drawings.

A spring, e, bears against the arm d' of the block D, tending to keep the arm d out and in position to couple with the opposing draw-head, or when coupled to keep the arm d up against the arm b, as shown in Fig. 3. Ashaft, F, pass'es through the hollow arm (b and between the two armsd'd/ of the block D, and has its bearings in the upper and lower covers of the said arm a. This shalt F has Secured to it the cam f, occupying a position within the recess of the block D, and a handle,f*, is pro- Vided on the top of the arm a, within easy reach of the operator, for the manipulation of the cam-lover to throw the catch-block D back against the action of the spring e, to release the opposite draw-head.
Whenthe coupling-heads are in the posi= tion shown in Fig. 2 and are brought together, the arm Z of the draw-head forces the block D of the draw-head A' back; but as soon as the projection Z/ of the arm passes the inner end of the block the block springs back of the -projection b thus coupling the two heads. i;
The shaft F of the coupling-head A, if in the position shown in Fig. 2, can be turned as shown in Fig. 3, releasing theblock D, and allowing it to spring back of the projection I/ of the draw-head A', as shown in Fig. 3. 'When it is desired to uncouple, one or other of the can-shafts is turned to throw the catch-block D back to the position illustrated at the left of F ig. 2, to free the arm b of the opposite draw-head. If the coupling-block is to be locked in the closed position, the shaft F is turned so that its cam f occupies the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. x
Each enlargement b' is slotted, as shown in o Fig. 2, for the reception of an ordinary link,
and apin, w', Fig. l, can be inserted through the holey in the projections when an opposing coupling is of the common link pattern.
I claim as my nventionn 1. The combination of the draw-head having two projecting arms, a couplingblock pivoted to one of said arms, a spring acting on said block to project the same, and a camlever acting upon the block to' retract it, all So substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the draw-head having two projecting arms, a couplingblock pivoted to one of said arms, a spring acting on said block to project the same, and a camlever acting upon the block to retract it, and constructed to retain the block in its retracted position, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a draw-head having two arms, a coupling-block pivoted to one of said arms, a spring for projecting said block, I and a cam-lever, the cam-head of which is contained in a recess in the block, whereby it serves to retract said block and to lock it in both the retracted and projected positions, all 5 substantially as specified.
4. The combination of draw-heads, each having a projecting arm, b, with rounded to this specification in the presence of two subse'ibing witnesses.
