UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. VARNAUF, OF WIOHITA, KANSAS.
WEATHER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,833, dated August 3, 1886.
Application filed March 29, 1886. Serial No. 197,073. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. VARNAUF, of \Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick, in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in eather-Strips; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is designed to be used on the edge of window-sashes and doors, between them and the frames, to prevent rattling and the admittance of dust, cold, or heat, and to prevent the breaking of glass in a falling sash or flying door. In the operation of this device when applied' to a door, in shutting it is crowded back, relieving the hinges of the weight and thus preventing sagging.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a door partly open with the weather-strip applied.
Similar letters of reference will better explain my invention, which .consists, first, of a firm ribbon-like strip, A, which may be of leather, canvas, or rubber, which is attached with nails to the door, as shown in Fig. 2, said strip extending at an angle from inner to outer edges of door by being backed up-by strips of soft rubber placed in folds, as B. One 30 edge of this piece B is fastened with tacks or nails near the middle on the edge of sash or door O. The other edge is bent up and folded under strip A, and attached to the outer edge of A with rivets, as shown at D, forming a case in which the folded edges of other strips E, are confined, while the other edge of this strip E is attached with tacks or nails to the inner edge of sash or door 0.
Having fully described my invention and the use for which it is designed, I wish to procure by Letters Patent the following claim:
In a weather-strip, the combination, with an outer flexible strip secured at one edge to the door or sash, of inner curved flexible strips, 1
which are also secured at one of their edges to said door or sash, the outer of which curved strips has one edge secured to the free edge of the outer strip, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
GEO. l VARNAUF. Witnesses:
N. F. NIEDERLANDE, W. A. IlIARTIN.
