SNOW- PLOW.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,726, dated August 3, 1886.
Serial No. 200,331. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS 0001:, a citizen of the United States, resident at Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings-isa representation of my invention, and is a side view of the same. 2 is a top view with hinged sideboards down. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line :0 00, Fig. 1.
My invention relates to snow plows for clearing away snow-drifts on railway-tracks; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a device that may be run in front of the engine, to cause the load to be deposited on the roof of the specially-prepared car and retained there until the engine has been backed away from the drift, after which hinged side-boards connected to the double-inclined roof of the plow-car may be let down to the inclined planes of the roof, when the snow on the roof of this car will slide oft and be deposited at some distance from the sides of the car. IVhen the drift is not too deep, the snow-plow may be run directly through it, and the snow will be elevated and deposited upon the roof of the car, from which it will slide off and fall some distance from the track.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the fiat car on which the improvements are built.
B designates the inclined shovel at the front of the flat car A, which is a simple inclined plane without curves or angles other than the incline and side flanges, 0, through which it is secured to the frame-work at the front of the car A.
hinged side-boards E and E, which are connected at their ends by chains G H to the horizontal brake-barI. The brake-bar I is provided on its rear end with a hand-wheel, J, having ratchet-teeth K thereon, which are engaged by a pivoted detent, L, to hold the ratchet-wheel and prevent the chains from unwinding when wound up until the detent is designedly released from engagement with the ratchet-wheel. The chains G H are connected with eyes M N at opposite ends of the hinged side-boards, so that the strain is distributed on the brake-bar. At its rear end the double-inclined roof is provided with a vertical guard, P, which prevents the snow from passing over the rear end of the snowcar.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-- 1. The combination, with the platformcar provided with the inclined shovel at its forward end and the double-inclined roof extending nearly the length of the platform, of-
the horizontal brakebar, the hinged sideboards, and the chains connecting the sideboards with the bral e-bar, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the platform-car, of the double-inclined roof, the hinged sideboards connected to the horizontal brake-bar by chains, and the vertical guard at the rear of the double-inclined root, substantially as specified.
A double-inclined roof provided with hinged side-boards connected to a horizontal brakebar by chains, said brake-bar having a ratchet and detent for holding it locked, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
-. CORNELIUS COOK.
