UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL TYRELL, oF eEAss VALLEY, CALIFORNIA.
CANDLESTICK.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,461, dated July 13, 1886.
Application filed March 13, 1886. Serial No. 195,182. (No model.)'
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it known that I, SAMUEL TYRELL, of Grass Valley, Nevada county, State of Galifornia, have invented an Improvement in Candlesticks; land I hereby deelarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.`
My invention relates to that class of candlesticks in which a vertically-adj ustable rest is arranged within the main tube, whereby the candle can be raised and the grease discharged; and my invention consists in a rest having a xed nut in its base and ina screw passing through the base of the Candlestick and th readed in the nut, said screw having a thumbpiece on its lower end bywhich it'is operated, as I shall hereinafter more fully describe.
The object of Iny invention is to provide a Candlestick in which the means for raising and lowering the rest are simple and effective and not liable to get out of order.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of Iny invention, the iigure is a vertical section of my candle- 'sticlc A is the base of the candlestick, and B is the main tube secured thereto.
C is the inner tube or hollow rest, uponv which the candle is supported when fitted in the main tube. The base of the rest C is pro vided with a iixed nut, c.
D is a screw, passing through the base and threaded in the nut c of the rest-C. Its lower or external-end has Xed to it a thumbpiece, E, by which it can be easily rotated, and the screw has a small flange or shoulder, d, just above or within the base A, so that a groove is formed between it and the exterior thumb-piece,which holds the screw to its place and keeps it from traveling, while permitting it to be easily rotated. rlhe rest C may be made in any suitable way--such as a short tube, as here shown, or it may be a plate on which the candle rests, the plate having arms connecting it with the ut below, or the whole rest may be considered as a hollow nut, the upper end supporting the candle. By turning the screw the rest is moved upward in the main tube, to elevate the candle and discharge the grease, and by reversing the screw the rest is again retracted. The means thus described .for vertically adjusting the rest are simple in construction, may be easily operated, and are not liable to get out of order.
employed. I do not therefore claim,- broadly,
the application of the screw, but confine myself tothe construction I have described.
My improvement, it will readily be seen, can be applied to the present and ordinary form of candlestick.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the base A and main tube B, of the tubular non-rotating rest C, closed at the top and having the nut c in its base, and a fixed screw, D, passing through the base and engaging the nut, substaptially as herein described.
2. The combination, with the base A and tube B, ofthe tubular nonrotati ng rest C, having closed top and provided with the nut c, the screw D, having a xed bearing in the base A, and the thumb-piece E, substantially as herein described.
3. A candlesticl; comprising the base A, main tube B, hollow or tubular rest C within the main tube, and having a closed top and a nut, c, in its base, and the screw D,grooved in the. base A, threaded in nut c, and having a thumb-piece, E, for operating it, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
SAMUEL TYRELL. Witnesses:
' G. H. HAwKINs,
THoIvIAs WILSON.
