J. H. NOLAN.
LAMP CHIMNEY CLEANER.
No. 345,169. Patented July 6, 1886.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HENERY NOLAN, OF PLEASANTON, KANSAS.
LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,169, dated July 6, 1886,
Application filed Oct )bOl 15, 1855 SerialNo. 180,009. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENERY N OLAN, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at Pleasanton, in the county of Linn and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Gleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for cleaninglampchimneys; and it consists in providing a wire frame having the shape or contour of an ordinary lamp-chinmcy at one end and a smaller size at the opposite end, said cleaner being adapted to receivea cloth, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention, the figure is a perspec tiveview ofa lamp-chimney cleaner constructed in accordance with my invention.
The lamp-chimney cleaner shown in the accompanying drawing may either be made of one or two pieces of spring-wire, said wires or wire being bent substantially in the shape shown,so as toprovide one end with side pieces, which are bent so as to present sides of-the same shape as a lamp-chimney of ordinary construction. The opposite end is bent so as to conform to the shape ofa lamp-chimney of larger size.
A represents the lamp chimney cleaner, which is preferably made of two pieces of spring-wire, a a, said wires being joined together at their upper ends or formed into an eye, a, adjacent to which eye the wires are joined together by means of a clasp, b, and solder or tin. Thewires a a from the clasp b are curved outwardly and then again inwardly and downwardly, so as to provide straight members 0, which are joined together by a clasp, 0. After the wires pass the straight members a they are curved outwardly and downwardly until they reach the point (2, where said wires are bent almost at right angles and then again downwardly, so as to form curves or bends e. The wires at a point near the arefor the purpose of holding the ends together when said portion is used as a handle.
To clean a lamp-chimney with my improved cleaner, a cloth is placed over the end and the said end inserted in the chimney, and by pressing the opposite ends together the portion having the cloth attached is expanded, so as to bear against the sides of the chimney.
By the construction hercinbefore described I provide a lamp-chimney cleaner which is substantially all in one piece, the end 6 being adapted to be used in cleaning small chimneys, while the opposite portion, 0, can be advantageonsl y used in cleaning those of larger size, and by making the cleaner of parallel wires the cloth used in cleaning the chimney can be passed between the wires, so as to hold the same in position.
I claim 1. The reversible lamp chimney cleaner herein described, consisting of the spring body portions 13 C, said portions being curved to conform to the interior of the chimneys, and formed of different size, whereby the cleaner is adapted for use in cleaning lamp-chimneys of different sizes, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The improved lamp chimney cleaner herein described, made up of parallel pieces ofspring-wire having correspondiugly-shaped opposite sides, the end of said wires being p rovided with a hook and eye and clasp, b cf, said clasps bearing and retaining said parallel wires, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HENERY NOLAN. Witnesses:
R. K. SHOEMAKER, I. A. DAVIS.
