S. A. OURRIER.
BUTTER BARRIER.
Patented June 8; 1886.
NITED STATES "AT ENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. OURRIER, OF CONCORD, NEV HAMPSHIRE.
BUTTER-CARRIER.
QTP'ECEFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 343,301, dated June 8, 1886.
Application filed July 1. 1885. Serial No. 170,375.. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. OURRIER, a, citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices adapted for use of farmers and others who carry from ten to fifty pounds of,butter(more or less) for the retail trade.
The invention consists in the combination, with a suitable case or box for carrying butter, of a series of closed drawers having a removable bottom, upon which cakes of butter maybe placed, said drawers being adapted for insertion and removal from said case, also to be inclosed therein, the object of my invention being to provide a butter-carrier for use as above, by means of which a dealer may peddle butter from door to door, if he desires, from morning until night, and always be enabled thereby to show it in a perfectly cool, fresh, sweet, and clean condition.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved carrier, having a portion of the door broken out, exposing to view the drawers in which the butter is placed, and having the hinged cover part way open and revealing the ice-compartment containing a cake of ice. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken below the ice-compartment and having the butter drawers removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the butter-drawers.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Arectangular case, A, is formed by means of side boards, A, and rectangular corner-uprights a. One of these sides (properlythe front) is provided with a hinged door, B, and a suitable cover, B, is hinged to the top of said case, which affords convenient access to an ice-compartment, a. This may be formed as shown in Fig. 1, whereby sufficient space is left between two of its sides and the side boards, A, for the passage of air, or all four of its sides may be similarly constructed, if desired.
Suitable ways, 0, extending from one to another of the corner-uprights a, on two sides of the case A, serve as supports for the drawers D, which may be inserted or removed from said case by means of the door B. These consistof two sides, D, one end, D and a top, the missing end, D, being secured to the bottom (1, which is adapted to slide in grooves formed on the inner side of the sides D. WVhen in service, the butter is placed upon the slide (1, which may or may not be provided with partitions d, for preventing small cakes of butter from coming in contact while the case may bejolting in a wagon over a rough road.
\Vhile the corner uprights a serve to strengthen the case A, their purpose is primarily for carrying the ways 0, whereby air has free circulation between the side boards, A, and the sides of the drawers D. For this same purpose stops 0 may also be placed on the back ends of the ways 0, or equivalent devices, and thus prevent the drawers from sliding way back. The ways 0, when constructed as shown in the drawings, will also prevent the drawers from coming in contact one with another, and thus air is allowed to circulate freely around and between said drawers.
It is not my intention to make this case as are those of refrigerators, and fit the drawers therein, for by actual experience I have found it unnecessary so to do.
The case is simply one thickness of wood, having no lining, and I have found by placing butter in this form of drawer, and placing said drawers within said case in the manner described, said butter is kept quite cool enough ordinarily without the use of ice.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a closed drawer having the front attached to the bottom thereof, upon which cakes of butter may be placed, said bottom being adapted for insertion and removal, with an outer casing adapted to inclose said drawer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a closed drawer having the front attached to a sliding bottom provided with longitudinal and transverse partitions, between which cakes of butter may be placed, with an outer casing adapted to inclose said drawer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' 3. The combination of a series of closed drawers, in which the front is attached to a sliding bottom upon which cakes of butter may be placed, with an outer casing adapted to inelose said drawers, substantially as and .for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of a series of closed drawers, in which the front is attached to a sliding bottom provided with longitudinal and transverse partitions, between which cakes of butter may be placed, with an outer casing adapted to inclose said drawers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In aclosed drawer, a removable bottom, and a front attached thereto, and longitudinal 6. The combination of closed drawers, sub-- stantially of the construction described, with a suitable casing adapted to inclose said drawers, leaving a space between and on either side of the same for the free circulation of air, as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
