UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HOSEUS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BANJO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,098, dated May 18, 1886.
Serial No. 108,551. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HOSEUS, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Banjos, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a rear View of a part of one of my improved banjos. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken through the line or at, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide banjos constructed in such a manner as to have a stronger and clearer tone than banjos c011- structed in the ordinary manner.
The invention consists in the combination, with the rim, head, and stick of a banjo, of a wire ring, supportingbrackets, regulatingsprings, and an adjusting-screw, as will be hereinafter fully described. I
A represents the rim, B the stick, O the head, I) the hoop, E the fleslrlioop, F the hooks, and G the brackets, of an ordinary banjo. To the inner side of the rim A are se cured the rear ends of brackets II, which incline inward, and have their forward ends curved outward and forward to form seats for the wire ring I. The wire ring I is made a little smaller than the rim A, and is placed concentric with and a little in front of the forward edge ofthe said rim.
J are two or more curved springs interposed between the stick B and the head O, and which cross each other at the center of the banjo. The ends of the springs Jare bent forward, inward, and forward to form seats for the wire ring I, against which they rest.
K is a handscrew, which passes through a screw-hole in the stick B at the center of the banjo, and its forward end rests against the centers of the convex sides of the springs .I, so that by turning the screw K the springs J can be adj ust-ed to regulate the tension of the said springs, and consequently the pressure of the wire ring I against the head O, and thus regulate the tension of the said head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a banjo, the combination, with the rim A, the head 0, and the stick B, of a wire ring, I, of a less diameter than the said rim, supporting-brackets I-I, tension-regulating springs J and an adj listing-screw, K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the tension of the head can be readily regulated, as set forth.
- HENRY IIOSEUS.
