UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED IIUMBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CORE FOR CASTING METAL TUBES.
SPECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,419, dated May 4. 1886.
Applicalion filed February 27, 1886. Serial No. 193,479.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED HUMBERT, of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Cores for Casting Metal Tubes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is designed to be used in working precious metals into ring or tubular form; and the object of my invention is to pro vide a casting-core, which will accommodate the shrinkage of the metal cast upon it, and which will of its own accord resume its normal shape after the casting is removed from the core.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved casting-core; and Fig. 2 shows the core in the casting-box, the latter being in sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is asection on line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
A represents the core, and B the castingbox.
The core A consists of arod or cylinder, and is,by preference, made of cast-iron. The core is provided at its upper end with the flange or collar a, for closing the box 13, and at its (No model.)
corein the casting-box. The core is slotted longitudinally with one or more slots, b,made, by preference, with a very fine saw. The slots 1) divide the core into sections 1), which are united at the upper end of the core by the piece of metahd, left by not extending the slots the whole length of the core. The connection of the sections with the solid metal,d,gives them a degree of elasticity, while the slotsb furnish space to allow them to yield, so that the contraction of the metal cast upon the core in cool ing will be amply accommodated, and when the casting is removed from the core the sections, owing to their elasticity, will resume their original relative position to each other.
The slots I) extend abor e and through the flange a, so that the latter will not interfere with the spring or yielding action of the sections, and so that metal may be cast the whole length of the core below the flange without injury in cooling.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a casting-core slotted longitudinally to form springsections, and provided with a collar at its upper end and a reduced portion at its lower end, as set forth.
ALFRED HUMBERT.
