H' A' DE LA HOOKB.
INDIGATOR LOCK POR GAR DOORS. No. 340,427. d Patented Apr. 20, 1886.
ii/www.. f? WM,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO HENRY A. DE LA HOOKE, OF TOLEDO, OHO.
INDICATOR-LOCK Fon CAR-DOORS.
SPECIFICATION ici-.ming part of Letters Patent No. 340,427, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed August 3l, 1885.
To all whom 2715 may concern:
Beitknown that l, HENRYA. DE LA Hooke, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in lndicator'Locks for (lar-Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The invention is specially intended for use as a freightear lock.
The invention is so constructed that anumber is automatically registered each time the lock is opened, in order that any tampering with the freight in the ear to which the lock is att-ached may be discovered. On closing the lock a certain number is exhibited, which indicates the station at which the lock was closed, and each time it is opened after leaving such station the automatic registration occurs, so that when the car reaches its destination the agent may be able to determine exactly how many times the lock has been opened during the transit of t-he freight, and where such ope n ing occurred, and thereby locate any tampering` with the freight. A
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of my improved permutationpadlock. Fig. 2 is an exterior elevation. Figs. 3 and t are vertical transverse sections, as hereinafter described. Fig. 5 is a view of a detail.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the respective figures.
A is the case of the padlock, of which a is the shackle, pivotcd at e. rlhe locking end of the shackle is provided with a hook, b, and a notch upon the opposite side, represented by c. The hook Z) is confronted by a numbered wheel, l, provided upon its inner face with teeth d. A detached view of the wheel is shown in Fig. 5. The wheel is provided with a spring, b, a paivl, b", and teeth b, by means of which the wheel is held against turning in but one direction. l
C is a dog or detent operated upon by a spring, o', uaid dog or detcnt having a projection, e, which fits within the notch c of the shackle a. The shackle a is provided with a spring, c, the effect of which is to force the shackle upward when released. The key-hole, which is adjacent tothe dog or deteut C, is shown by Serial No. li'ir. (No model.)
vBearings f/ g' g g are provided within the casing, preferably forming a part thereof, and which support or aid in supporting the inner ends of shafts bearing the numbered wheels D, E, and F.
G is a shaft having its outer bearing in the casing A and its inner bearing at g, and carrying a toothed wheel, l..
H is a similar shaft havingits outer bearing inthe casing A and its inner bearing at g', said shaft carrying the numbered wheel I). Coneeutric with the shaft H, and having its bearings in f/ g", is a shaft,H, carrying the numbered wheel E'and the toothed wheel hf, which gears with the toothed wheel zY of the shaft G; also concentric with the shaft H, and haxYA ing its bearings in g g", is a shaft, H,carry ing the numbered wheel F, to which is at tached the toothed wheel 7L. A shaft, l, also having its outer bearing in the easing A and its inner bearing in g,carries a toothed wheel, h, which gears with the wheel 7L upon the shaft H. Each of the shafts is provided outside of the casing A with a knob or button, i, by means of which it may be revolved.
At the inner extremity of the pivotcd end ofthe shackle e is an inclined tongue, lr, Fig. Li, and at the lower part of the casing is secured a spring-bar, K., having small teeth or corrugations 7d, k, and 7.:, which, at proper times, are intended to engage with similar teeth or `proieetions,Z Z Z,upon the shafts G, H, and I, respectively.
ln operation, supposing the lock to be closed, the hook l) is in the position shown in Fig. lthat is to say, the projection e of the dog or detcnt C is within the notch c of the shackle a..
The projection b is clear of the teeth d of the d wheel B. The teeth or projections It k k' of the spring-bar K are in gear with the teeth ZZ Z of the shafts G, H, and I. Supposing the ear has been closed and the lock adjusted ata station numbered, say, 123, the numbered wheels D, E, and F, having (of course before the lock Yas closed) been adjusted by hand, so that the numbers 1, 2, and 3 shall be exhibited, as shown, through the openings m, a, and o of Fie. 2, and the wheel B adjusted so as to indicate, say, No. 1 at the opening p, it is apparent that should thelock be opened by inserting the key and pushing back the dog or detent (i, the shackle a cannot rise by the ac ICO tion of the spring a" without the hook b of the lever coming in contact with a tooth, d, of the IWheel B, and causing it to revolve one tooth,
and thus indicate another number as the num- 5 ber 2 at the opening p, Fig. 2;
The openings m u o p are suitably closed by glass to exclude dust.
Normally, and when in the position shown in Fig. 1, the hook b is sprung back or out of lo contact with the teeth of the wheel B,but upon the release of the lever the hook b,moving upward,co1nes in contact with the teeth as stated, and consequently registers a number through the medium of the wheel B. It will also be 15 seen by reference to Fig. 4 that when the 2o locked whenever the lock is closed.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that when the shackle a is lifted the teeth of the spring-bar and shafts are automatically detached, this being effected by the elasticity of 25 the bar K.
It will be understood that the numbers of the wheels D, E, and F areto be adjusted by the authorized agent at any station in the line of travel of the car, and that the number indicated at the openings m n o will always show what agent has last opened the lock. Thus there is a concerted action between the numbered wheels D, E, and F, and the numbered wheel B. y
Having described my invention, I claiml. In an indicator-lock, the combination, with the shackle a, provided with a hook, b, and the spring detent or dog C, of the toothed wheel B, whereby, when the said shackle is released, the wheel may be revolved thereby, substantially as set forth.
2. In an indicator-lock, the combination, with the hooked shackle a,provided with the tongue lc, and the toothed wheel B,of the shafts G, H, and I, having gearing, the geared and numbered wheels D, E, and F, and the springbar K, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of May, A. D. 1885.
