UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IVESTINGHOUSE, JR., OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE-JOINT FOR GAS-MAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,268, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed March I, 1886.
Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citi-y zen of the United States, have invented or dis covered a certain new and useful Improvement in PipeJoints for Gas-Mains, of which improvement the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figures l to`4 are longitudinal half-sections through pipejoints illustrating the application of my invention.
My invention relates to pipe joints of the bowl and spigot type; and its object is to afford effective and convenient means for packing the same.
To this end my invention, generally stated, consistsin the combination ot' a bowl or socket ended pipesecton, a spigot or plain ended section inserted therein, a packing of rubber, ber, or analogous material, stretched over the spigot end and protected by a metallic cover, and a sottmetal Apacking filling the space in the bowl exterior to the spigot-packing.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In 'the practice of my invention the spigot end of a pipe-section, l, is inserted in the usual manner in the bowl 2 ofthe adjacent pipesection l. The spigot endlwithin the bowl is inclosed by a packing, 3, of rubber, ber, or analogous materiahwhich is stretched around it, and is in turn inclosed by a metallic cover,5, in order to protect it while the lead packing with which the remaining space' within the bowl is to be filled is being poured. The cover of the spigot-packing may be either a strip or plate of metal, plain or corrugated, as in Figs. 1 to 3, or a coil of wire wound around it, as in Fig. 4. The space between the cover 5 Serial No. 193,560. (No model and the inner surface of thebowl is filled with a packing. 4 of lead or other soft metal, which is poured into the bowl and calked atits outer end. Hemp or other packing, 1I, maybe interposcd between the end of the spigot and the shoulder of the bowl.
.The spigot-packing 3 may be divided longitudinally into two sections, separated by an intervening space, which forms achamber, 7, for intercepling leakage from the main, as in sundry of my prior patents, and such chamber may be provided with a vent or escapepipe, lo, com m unicati ng with a passage leading throughthe bowl, soft-metal packing, and cover of the spigot-packing, and connected in any suitable manner.Y
I claim herein as my invention- 1. The combination of a bowl or socket ended section, a spigot or plain ended section inserted therein, a packing of rubber, fiber, or analogous material inclosing the spigotend, a protecting cover ot' metal surrounding said spigotApaeking, and a soft-metal packing filling the space in the bowl exterior to said cover. substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a bowl or socket ended pipe section, a spigot or plain end ed sec tion inserted therein, a packing of rubber, tiber, or analogous material formed in two sections, separated by an intervening space constituting a leakage-intercepting chamber, a protecting cover of metal surrounding said spigot-packi11g,and a soft-metal packing lling the space in the bowl exterior to said cover, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. Y
GEO. IVES'IINGHOUSE, JR.
