MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 339,048, dated March 30, 1886.
Application tiled January 22, 1886. Serial No. 189,435.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE CRoMPToN and HORACE WYMAN, both of Worcester, county of XVorcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mechanical Movements, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specitication, like lett-ers on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a mechanical movement wherein the end of a. main lever of the third order may be placed in any one of six different positions, and be there held at rest and be moved from any one to any other of the said six different positions in the same time, as will be described.
The mechanical movement herein to be described contains a main lever of the third order pivoted upon an auxiliary lever of the third order. The main lever of the third order has attached to it between its ends a cord or chain extended over a pulley or block, and the op posite end of the said cord or chain is attached toaconnecting-rod. Theauxiliary lever of the third order at one end has attached to it a cord or chain,which is extended over asecond pnlley or block of smaller diameter, and the said cord or chain is attached to a connecting-rod,
- and the other end of the said auxiliary lever has its fulcrum on a pin at the end ofa third eonnectingrod, all three of the connectingrods referred to engaging cranks on three semi-rotating wheels.
The particular features in which this invention consists will be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claim at the end of this speciiieation.

which are placed three wheels, gh z', each provided with a crank, the latter having joined to them, respectively, the connectingrods g h z". The wheels g, h, and 'i will in practice be toothed at their peri pheries, and supported as described in United States Patent N o. 281,842, and will be turned at the proper times by long gearsy substantially such as shown in the said Patent No. 281,842, to which reference may be had. The frame A has also attached to it, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 2, afnlcrum or stud, a, upon the body of which iS mounted the small pulley I), the said stud having an offset portion provided with a pin, c, on which is mounted a large pulley, d, the said pulleys being thus mounted eccentrieally with relation to each other. The main lever n-a lever of the third order-has its i'nlcrum at l0 on the auxiliary lever o, having its fulcrum at l2 on the connecting-rod i. The free end of the main lever, which is to be moved into any one of six different positions, has attached to it a cord or chain, p, extended over a sheave, p, on a stud, p2, the said. cord or chain having joined to it a weight or other article to be moved, the weight of which is sufiicient to counterbalance the weight ot' t-he levers n and o. The lever n has attached to it one end of a cord or chain, d2, which, extended about t-he pulley d, is joined to the connecting-rod g', and the free end of the auxiliary lever o has attached to it one end of a cord or chain, b2, which, extended over the pulley b, is Ijoined to the connectingrod 11..
The cord or chain p may be attached to a guided vertically-movable rod, instead of to the weight p3.
In the diagran1,Fig. 3, wherein the free end of the lever n is opposite the station l, the wheels g and 1i are in such position that their crank-pins stand at the right of the stud A', the crank-pin of the wheel L standing at the left of said stud. To bring the end of the lever n to station 2, the wheel z' will be turned from the position Fig. 3, to place its crankpin at the left of the st-ud A', as in Fig. 2*. To bring the lever n to station 3, it will be necessary,with the parts in the position Figs.
' 2 to 4, to turn the wheel h and place its crankbring the end ofthe lever u to station 6 from pin at the right of the stud A. To bring the end of the lever a to station 4 from station No. 3, the Wheel i Will be turned to place its crankpin on the right of the stud A', and the wheels g and h will be turned to place their crank-pins at the left of the said stud, as in Fig. G. To bring the end of lever a to station 5 from station 4, it is only necessary to turn wheel h from the position diagram Fig. G to the right of the `stud A', as in Fig. 7, and to station 5 the Wheelz'will be turned to place its crank-pin to the left of the stud A, asin Fig. 8. To move the lever n from station 2, as represented in Fig. 4, to station No. 5, as in Fig. 7, the Wheels g h 'i will each be turned a half-rotation.
By contrasting the diagrams, Figs. 3 and 8, indicating, respectively, positions 5 and 6, it will be noticed that the cranks of the wheels in Fig. 8 are placed just the reverse of those shown in Fig. 3, and the same is true of Figs. 5 and 6.
Among other things for which the mechanil cal movement herein described is especially applicable is the movement of shuttle-boxes in looms, or for the movement ofva lever or rod which for any reason is at times to have a variable throw or stroke.
Ve claim-- Three Wheels having crank-pins, three connecting-rods joined to the said crank-pins, two pulleys, and a main and an auxiliary lever of the third order, one having its fulcrunl on the other,combined with two cords or chains, each extending from one connecting-rod about one of the said pulleys, and being joined at its opposite end to one of the said levers below its fulcrum, to operate substantially as described.
