LOUIS R. SASSINOT, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
APPARATUS FOR EMPTYING PRlVY-VAULTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No,338,878, dated March 30, J 886.
Application filed January 23, 1886. Serial No. 189,472. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs R. SASSINOT, of I New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Emptying Privy- Vaults, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus for emptying privy-vaults, by which the obnoxious gases arising from the disturbed fecal matter are completely destroyed, thus permitting the emptying of the vaults at any time during the day or night.
The invention consists of the combination and arrangement of a water-tight tank or reservoir with various parts and devices, hereinafter more fully set forth and described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure shown represents a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improvement.
The water tight tank or reservoir A, of suitable size and shape, is either mounted upon an ordinary wagon, B, as shown, or forms of itself part of a wagon, so as to be easily moved to and from the place of operation.
The tank A is provided near the bottom of one end with an outlet-pipe, O, and near the top of the other end with the inlet-pipe O.
A smaller water-tight reservoir, D, is 10- eated either upon the tank A, as represented in the drawing, or may be placed on any suitable part of the wagon B, in such a manner that the pipe E places it in communication with the tank A. A tube, F, having a cock, F, and a funnel on its upper end, connects with the small reservoir D.
A gaspipe, G, having a cock, G, and provided on its upper end with a burner, G is attached to the reservoir D, the burner G being provided with a suitable shield, G placed a short distance above the orifice of the burner G and attached to the same by any suitable means.
An exhaust-pipe, H, connects the watertight tank A with the upper part of the res ervoir D by means of the gas-pipe G, to which it is attached below the cock G. The exhaustpipe H is provided with a cock or valve, H.
The smaller water-tight reservoir is filled or partly filled by means of the funnel and the pipe with a gas-generating fluid, or with any suitable disinfecting or deodorizing liquid.
The operation is as follows: An ordinary hand or steam pump is connected by means of a suitable tube with the inlet-pipe O of the tank A, and an additional suction-hose connects the pump with the privy-vault to be emptied. The pump, when set in motion, forces the fecal matter of the privy-vault into the tank A until the same is nearly filled. The tube connecting with the pump is then detached from the inlet-pipe O, and the whole apparatus is then conveyed away to be emptied.
It will be seen that by every stroke of the pump a certain amount of infected airis compelled to pass through the tube into the small reservoir D, where the air is carbureted by being forced through the liquid contained in the reservoir D. The carbureted gas passes up the pipe to the burner, where it is ignited, thus destroying the offensive odors.
Instead of the gasgenerating fiuid, any other disinfecting gas or liquid may be used in the tank D, and the foul air, being forced through this disinfectant, as above described, is deprived of its poisonous qualities.
When the tank A is being emptied, the cock or valve of the exhaust-pipe is opened to draw off all excess of gas remaining above the surface of the liquid in the reservoir D into the tank A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a portable tank or reservoir provided with inlet and outlet pipes, of a smaller reservoir containing a disinfecting-fluid and connected with the portable tank by a pipe, and of a gas pipe and burner connected with the sma ler reservoir to burn the carbureted gases generated in the smaller res ervoir, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the portable tank or reservoir A, provided with the inlet-pipe G and the outlet-pipe O, of a pipe connecting the tank A with the generating-reservoir D, of the gas-pipe G and the burner G, having a shield, G, and of a device for filling the reservoir D with a disinfectingfluid, substantially as shown and described.
3. The portable tank A, provided with the tube E, in combination with the reservoir D, 10 inlet-pipe O and the outlet-pipe O, the tube the gas-pipe G, and the exhaust-pipe H, pro- E, and the reservoir D, provided with the pipe vided with the cook or valve H, substantially F and the funnel F in combination with the as shown and described. 5 gas-pipe G, provided with the 'cock G, the
burner G and the shield G substantially as LOUIS SASSINOT' shown and described. Witnesses: 4. The portable tank A, provided with the CHAS. MARIN, inlet-pipe O and the outlet-pipe O, and the EDW. DE ANNAs.
