SASH-BALANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,817, datedv March 30,1886.
Application filed November 27, 1885. Serial No. 181,086.
To all zul/7.0722, it may concern:
Be it `known that we, CHARLES H. AMES and MILo HARRIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Balances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efficient sash-balance to take the place of weights, and one that may be usedin houses already built as well as in those being built; and the invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangementof parts, as will be more fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l shows the invention as applied. Fig. 2 shows ratchet-pulley in section.
In the drawings, A represents a window as commonly made. B is the lower, and B the upper, sash, as seen from the inside.

It will be observed that this method of applying helical springs for balancing windowsash is much cheaper than weights, and can readily be put in any house already built, as well as in new ones; and if the cords are ever worn, so as to need new ones, they may be put in by any one. As any desired stress may be given the spring, sash of different Weight may be balanced by the same size spring, and we can readily adjust the tension on the springs to overcome friction that may be caused by improper fitting or swelling of Sash and frame by damp weather; and to enable us to more perfectly adjust the tension of the spring we sometimes make the pulleys to which the springs are attached in two ratchet-sections, X Y, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This enables us to adjust the tension to a nicety, and at a moments time.
By using the jamb-casings for bearings of rod G itis much cheaper and stronger than any other method of holding the rod, and by putting it below the upper face-casing enables us to readily use our device on windows already built, which is v'ery desirable.

Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a window-frame, the supporting-rod G, having its bearings in said frame, and provided with pulleys I I, rigidly secured thereto, spring F, loose pulley H, and spring E, with suitable means of connecting the pulleys with the sash of the window, as and for the purpose set forth.
2.
