To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL HERTENSTEIN, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reservoir Cooking- Stoves; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in reservoir cookingstoves. Hitherto the custom has been to provide a stove of the above named character with two dampers operated independently of one another,for the purpose of directing the flame and heat from the firepot partially or wholly beneath the reservoir when the oven-draft is open. Now, it is wellknown that the saving ofone or more castings or pieces in the construction of a stove, and at the same time improving its capacity for heating,cooking,&c.,or at least not injuring its usefulness, is an important item to both the manufacturer and the purchaser.
The object of my present invention is to provide a fire-flue which will conduct the heat to a point beneath the reservoir, and to so locate the smoke-pipe that the flame and heat will be arrested for a moment and turned toward the front of the stove before passing from beneath the reservoir and entering the pipe.
A further object is to provide a damper which will simultaneously close the direct- View of the rear portion of the stove, partly in section, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detached views of parts.

The rear portion of the top of the oven, which also forms the lower face of the fire-flue, is set on a decline, as shown at Z), and terminates a short distance in front of the rear stove-wall, c. The rear oven-wall, (Z, extends downwardly from the termination of the declined portion 1;,parallel, or nearly so, with the rear stove-wall,0, forming the rearoven-flms, d d". The latter connect with the bottom oven-lines, e 6, formed between the bottom of the oven and the bottom of the stove. The flues e 6 connect with each other at or near the front of the stove. An inclined casting or deflector, F, is located above and parallel with the declined portion 12, terminating at its lower edge in a rearwardly projecting horizontal flange, f, directly above and extending a short distance to the rear of the wall 0 of the stove, and at its upper edge in contact with the top of the stove, thus forming a declined continuation of the fire-flue leading from the fire-pot over the oven. The bottom of the reservoir 0 is located above the flange f of the casting F a distance equahor nearly so.to the depth of the fire-flue, the front lower edge of the reservoir lying over the central portion of the flange. Between the bottom of the projection D and the bottom of the reservoir 0 is a chamber, G, adapted to afford sufficient space fora free circulation of the flame and heat which are proj ected therein from the fireflue. The rear corners of the chamber G are preferably rounded, as shown, to give the stream of flame or heat a turn from the sides of the chamber toward the center. The upper face of the de flector F is provided with a pair of guides or wings, H, extending from the ends of the lower edge of the declined portion of the deflector diagonally toward the upper edge of the same, forming, together with the deflector and the top of the stove, a contracting flue leading from the chamber G to the base of the smoke-pipe I. The declined portion of the fire-flue leading from the fire'pot to the chamber G is adapted to be closed by a sectional damper, K K, located at the juncture of the lire-flue with the chamber G. The dampen-section K is adapted to close the upper end of the flue d when in a position for direct draft, and to close the righthand section of the main fire-flue at itsjunction with the chamber G when in a position for indirect or oven draft. The rear or lower edge of the damper-section Kis provided with pintles Z, which extend through sockets m, formed in the side of the stove and in the partition L,
- which separates the fiues d d, and is thereby hinged with its pivotal edge in close proximity to the upper edge of the stove-wall c. The pintle Zwhich extends through the side of the stove is turned at right angles to form an op eratinghandle, M; or it may be provided with a knob, thumb-button, or otherdesirablehandle. The pintle lwhich extends through the partition L is provided with a'crank,n, the free end of which takes under the damper-section K, which latter is similar in construction to the section K, and is hingedwith its pivotal edge in contact with the lower edge of the declined portion 1) of the oven-ceiling. The damper section K is adapted to close the upper end of the flue d when in a position for direct draft, and to close the left-hand section of the main fire-flue when in a position of indirect or oven draft. It will be observed that when the damper-section K is rotated toward the rear it will simultaneously open the flue d to the main fireflue, and close the latter to the chamber G, and it will be further observed that the rotation of the section K toward the rear will, through the crank 12, rotate the section K towardthe front, thereby opening the flue d to the chamber G and closing the said chamber to the main fire-flue. Thus, when the damper-sections K K are in a depressed position the flame and heat will be projected into the chamber G in a broad sheet, and, after circulating beneath the reservoir 0, will be turned about and pass above the deflector F between the contracted guides H into the smoke-pipe I. \Vhen, however, the handle M is rotated toward the rear, the damper-sections K K will both be rotatedinto an elevated position, completely closing the direct communication between the main flreflue and the chamber G, and at the same time opening the flue d to the main flue and the flue d to the chamber G, thereby sending the flame and heat downwardly through the flue d, forwardly through the flue e, thence rearwardly through the flue e, upwardly through the fl-ue'd into the chamber G, where it will circulate beneath the reservoir 0, as before noted, and pass between the guides l-I into the smoke-pipe I. The circulation of the'entire stream of flame and heat will thus be obtainedbeneath the reservoir, whether the draft be direct or indirect, and the change from direct to indirect draft will be accomplished by the turning of a single handle.
It is evident that many slight changes might smoke-exit flue in front of the reservoir, of a fire-pot, an oven having a declined portion, and a deflector located above the declined portion of the oven and parallel therewith and extending into the heat-chamber under thereservoir, whereby the heat and products of combustion are caused to pass into said heatchamber before they can escape from the stove.
2. The combination, with the oven having a declined portion, the reservoir, and the heatchamber located beneath the reservoir, of a heat and flame deflector parallel with the declined portion of the oven. for separating the declined and inclined fire-fines leading to and from the said heat-chain her, and guides located above the deflector for contracting the flue leading from the heat-chamber smoke-pipe, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a fire'pot, oven, the reservoir, the heat-chamber located beneath the reservoir, and the deflector located between the top' of the stove and the oven and forming flues leading from the fire-pot to the heat-chamber, and from the heat'chamber to the smoke-pipe, which latter is located in front of the reservoir, of the curved wall located within the heat-chamber behind the deflector, adapted to turn the current of heat to the direct draft and sending the entire current ofheat belowthe oven, and a single rod or handle, substantially as described, for op' erating both dampers.
