Be it known that I, AXEL GoRD, of Grant Park, in the county of Kankakee and State of Iliinois, have invented certain n ew and useful Improvements in Hay-Presses5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hay-presses; and it consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
The device herein shown as embodying my invention comprises, in connection with a'haypress proper, which is mounted upon wheels for convenience in transportation, a horsepower driving-gear especially adapted for-ach uating the press, as will hereinafter appear.
The invention may be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a hay-press and driving apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the horse-power driving-gear, certain parts thereof being removed to show portions beneath. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same, taken upon line :r x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the haypress proper. Fig. 6 is alongitudinal sectional view of the same, taken upon line x x of Fig. 1.

rI`he body A of the press is of the form generally of a rectangular box open at one end, and provided with a horizontally-reciprocating compressing piston or plunger, D, enteringits open end, a door, E, at its top adjacent to its open end for the insertion of the hay, and a side door, F, adjacent to its closed end for the exit of the compressed bale. The said piston or plunger is constructed to advance in compressing the bale to a point adjacent to the edge of the door F, which latter is made of the same length and height as the compressed bale, so that the latter may be readily removed when the said door is opened. The said door is desir-ably provided with a spring-latch, f, whereby it is held closed when shut, and may be readily opened. The top door, E, is located in such position as to enable the hay to 'be deposited in yfront of the plunger when the latter is retracted, said door, in the operation of the device, being closed during the advance movement of the plunger, to confine the hay at such time.
The top wall of the press at its portion opposite the door F, in which the hay is compressed, is preferably formed by a separate position by pivoted links or arms g, so arranged that the said wall-section may be thrown and'held downwardly when the bale is being compressed, and may be released and allowed to rise or yield upwardly, so as to remove the pressure from the bale aft-er the latter has been compressed. For this purpose, the links or arms g are arranged in an inclined position, as shown more clearly in Fig. 6, in such manner that the wall-section will be carried downwardly by thrusting it endwise; anda device is provided for moving and holding the said section, consisting of a vertical rock-shaft, G', mounted upon the frame at the end of the section G, toward which the latter moves when lifted, and provided with a `laterally-directed arm or wing, g', adapted to engage a transversely-arranged projection, gz, upon the said section G when the rock-shaft is rotated, the parts being so arranged that when the Wing is engaged with the projection g2, and is at right angles with the latter, the said section will be held at the downward limit of its movement. The said rock-shaft is also provided with an arm, g3, by which it may be actuated, said arm being conveniently operated by means of a cord, G2, attached to the end of the arm, and passing over pulleys G3 and G4 upon the frame, and secured to the door F in such manner that when the door is closed the arm will be swung into position to force and hold the section Gr downwardly, and thus insure the bringing of the said section to place before pressure is applied to thehay. In this construction of these parts the rock-shaft will not be moved in the opening of the door, but the movable section will be released by moving by hand the arm g3.

It will ofcourse be understood .in this connection that the plunger will be ymoved backwardly a sufficient distance at each reciprocation to permit the hay within the receptacle E2 to fall in front of said plun-V ger, whereby a quantity of hay will be carried forward by the plunger in each advance movement of the latter.
The door E is, as before stated, kept closed during the forward movement of the plunger, a spring-latch, e, mounted upon the door and engaging suitable recesses or projections upon the frame, being preferably employed to hold it closed. The driving-gear C for actuating the plungerk consists, generally, of a pivoted arm or sweep, L, mounted upon a suitable frame, C',`and j adapted in a familiar mannerfor theattachment of horses, whereby-the arm may be swung about its pivot, said arm being constructed by suitable operative connections to give a recipf rocatory movement to the connecting-rod J, and, through thev mediumrof the lever H, to the plunger. To carry backwardly the connecting-rod J 1 af terit hasbeen moved in the manner described, the sweep L is provided with a second springdetent, N, constructed. in the same manner as the detent M, before described, and devised to engage a movable block, O,.adapted to slide horizontally in grooved guides O' arranged upon the frame C. concentrically with .the pivotalaxis of the sweep.y The said blocky is connected by means of a rope, .0,1passing 'over a pulley, O2, with the end of the lever J' necting-rod J in a direction opposite to that in which they are moved by the engagement of the detent M with the stud j. The' detent N is held in position for engagement with the block O by means of a spring, n, suitably applied for the purpose, and the said detent is released from the block at the forward limit .of the movement of the latter by an inclined or cam surface, O3, operating` upon depending projection n upon the said detent.
From the construction above described, itis entirely obvious that in the rotary movement of the sweep about its axis the end of thelever J2 carrying the stud j will be given an oscillatory movement, which is communicated to the lower end of the lever H by means of the bar J and the connecting-rod J, through the medium of which lever the desired reciprocatory movement is given to the plunger of the press.
In the operation of the devices described it is not contemplated that sufcient hay will be inserted in front of the plunger to make a complete bale at one reciprocation thereof, but the plunger will be reciproeated continuously, and a quantity of hay placed in front thereof at each reciprocation until sufficient hay has been forced into the press to make a bale of the desired size and weight.
In order to positively hold the plunger in its advanced position during the time that the compressed hayis being tied, a hooked detent, P, is desirably pivoted upon the frame C in position to engage the bar J at the time that the said bar reaches the forward limit of its movement, the said detent preventing lateral movement of the bar when engaged with the latter, and thereby holding the lever J2 and the said bar from backward movement. Io enable the said detent P to be readily disengaged, its portion p, back of its pivotal point, is desirably constructed to engage a stop, p', upon the sweep, so that in the further movement of the sweep after it has been stopped for the purpose of tying the bale, the detent will be released from the bar J and the latter allowed to movebackward upon contact ofthe detent N with the block O. In the particular construction illustrated the stop p is formed by one of the supports or bearings of the detent M.
In order to prevent any relative movement of the body of the hay-press and the frame C under the operation oi' the driving-gear described, a brace,Q, is herein shown as extending between the said frame and the axle B of the press. Said brace desirably consists of two timbers, Q, abutting at their outer ends against the frame C', and resting at their inner ends against downwardly inclined arms Q2,attached to the axle B. The connecting-bar J is desirably located between the said timbers Q', which latter are placed on edge for this purpose, and the space between the timbers 1s covered by planking q uniting the timbers and enabling the horses moving the sweep to readily pass over the timbers without liability of striking the said connecting-bar.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the walls of a hay-press provided with an outwardly-yielding section, G, of pivoted arms or links supporting said section, and a rock-shaft provided with a projection or wing engaging the section for holding it closed, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the walls of a hay-press provided with an exit-door, F, and with an outwardly-yielding sect-ion, G, of pivoted arms or links sustaining said section, a rock-shaft provided with a projection or wing engaging the section for holding it closed, and with an arm whereby said rock-shaft may be moved, a cord connecting said door with the arm of the rock-shaft, and suitable guide-pulleys for the cord, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a hay-press provided .with an inlet-opening, A2, in its top, of a door for closing said inlet-opening constructed to close by gravity, and provided with a spring-latch, a reciprocating plunger, a 1ever, H, connected with said plunger for actuating the latter, a vertical rock-shaft, K, provided with an arm, K', and with an arm, K2, engaging the said lever H, a cord connecting the arm K with the said spring-latch, and a guide-pulley for said cord, substantially as described.

The combination, with the reciprocating plunger of a hay-press, of a revolving bar or sweep, a lever, J2, pivoted concentrically with said bar or sweep and provided with a pin or stud, j, a springdetent, M, upon the sweep engaging said stud, a stationary cam-surface engaging said detent M, a block, O, movable concentrically with the pivotal axis of the sweep and connected with the lever J2, a second vspring-detent, N, upon the sweep engaging the said block, a stationary cam-surface engaging the detent N, and a verticallyarranged lever,

6. The combination, with the reciprocating plunger of a hay-press, of a revolving bar or sweep, a lever, J2, pivoted concentrically with said bar or sweep and provided with a pin or stud, j, -a s pring-detent, M, upon the sweep engaging said stud, a stationaryr cam-surface engaging said detent M, a movable block, O, curved guides O' for said block arranged con-- centrically with the pivotal axis of the sweep, a cord connecting said block with the lever J2, a guide-pulley for the cord, a detent, N, upon the sweep engaging said block, a stationary carn-surface engaging the detent N, and connecting devices between said lever J? and the plunger, substantially as described.
7. The combination, with the hay-press and plunger, of the 'sweep L, provided with the spring-detent M, lever J2, bar J', pivoted to said lever and connected with the plunger, and the detent P, applied to hold said bar from backward movement, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with the hay-press and plunger, of the sweep L, provided with kthe from backward movement, saidv vsweep being n providedwith a projecting part or stop, p', engaging the detent for releasing the latter, substantially as described.
9. The combination, with a hay-press mounted upon wheels and provided with a recipro eating plunger and inclined arms Q, rigidly vattached to the press, of a horse-power driving-gear comprising a frame, C', resting upon the ground, a connecting-rod, J, transmitting 4o motion from the driving-gear to the press, and a brace between the press and the frame C', comprising side pieces, Q', resting upon the ground and engaging the frame, and the arms Q2, and planking q, connecting said side pieces 45 and located over theconnecting-rod J, substantially as described.
