To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. TUBMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waldron, in the county of Scott and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a description.

Figure l is a front elevation of my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line ac x in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of the bolt and draw-bar. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the end plates removed from the frame, and Fig. 7 is an end view of the same.

My invention has reference to combinationlocks, which may be used as pad-locks or as door-locks; and it consists in the detailed con struction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described, whereby the said locks are arranged to open when in certain relative positions of their parts,which may be changed at will as often as desired, but which will not open unless in the particular position predetermined on.

A is the frame of the lock, B the bolt, and C the hasp engaging with the bolt and pivoted in the frame on the pin 0. D is the draw-bar by which the bolt is drawn back. E is the locking-bar for securing the bolt in its locked position.

The locking-bar E is turned around and drawn back by the tumbler F, fastened on the end of it, which projects from the frame. The

other end is made with apart, 6, which enters a hole in the bolt B. A key, 6, prevents the locking-bar from being drawn backward, ex-

cept when it is opposite the slot ain the fixed bar a of the frame A.

A series of tumblers, G, H, and I, are arranged on the locking-bar and provided with either side of it-of which the upper one, g,has figures or letters on its circumference,a central hole larger than the locking-bar, and a guidering, to keep it in position. The hole in the tumbler G is also larger than the locking-bar, but the hole in disk 9 fits it, and is provided with a slot, 9 The disks 9 g are united to the tumbler Gv by one or more pins in the sides of them which project into one or more of a series of corresponding holes in said tumbler G, so that the disks 9 g and tumbler G may be made to occupy various relative positions, and theletters and figures on the circumference of them may be made to form different combinations. The tumbler H has one disk, h, also united to it by one or more pins projecting therefrom into a series of holes in the side of it, so that different combinations of the tumbler and disk may be effected. The hole in the tumbler H is larger than the locking-bar, but the hole in disk h fits it, and is provided with a slot, h. The tumbler I .is similar to the tumbler H. The disk t is similar to the disk h,and is provided with the slot i.

The locking-bar E is further provided with keys 0 e 0 let into it which admit of its being revolved,when pushed up, as they then come in the larger central holes of the tumblers G H I, but prevent the locking-bar from being drawn back unless the said keys come opposite to and can slide into the slots 9 h, and t" of the disks 9, h, and i.

The tumblers and disks are keptin position by the end plates, J and K, let into notches a" in the frame A. These end plates form a bearing for the tumbler F, and have overlapping portions j and k, which are united together by screws or pegs j. Letters or figures are marked on the outside of the end plates, which form various combinations with other letters or figures on the circumference of the turn bler F, which is provided with a boss, f, on which it is journaled in the end plates, J and K.

The tumbler F is secured in any desired pomay engage with it automatically when shut down. *When made in two parts, one of them, b, serves as the bolt which engages with the hook c on the end of the hasp O. The second part, 1), slides within it, and is provided with a hole to receive the end 6 of the locking-bar, and with a slotted portion, 7), for receiving the end of the draw-bar D. The part b is formed with flanges b sliding in the grooves b in the part b. The two parts b and b have the spring I) arranged between them, so that when the hasp of the lock is pressed down the curved lower side of the hook c pushes back the part b of the bolt against the pressure ,of, the spring b and automatically engages itself, but cannot be disengaged again without a knowledge of the combination at which the lock has been set.

The draw-bar D is provided with an end, d, engaging with the slotted portion b in the bolt, in which it turns freely, but cannot be moved endwise without also moving the bolt. A key, d, projects from the side of the drawbar. A head, d is fastened on the end of the draw-bar, and is provided with letters or figures on its circumference alternating with projections for turning it round with the fingers.

A sleeve, L, is journaled in the frame A, and provided with a slot, Z, and a groove, ZJ Apin, Z, is driven through the sides of the frame A, so as to pass through the groove Z at one point. This pin keeps the sleeve L from moving endwise, but leaves it free to turn. The end Z of the sleeve L, which projects through the frame, is made manysided and provided with a tumbler, M, fitting loosely upon it and having projections on its circumference for turning it round alternately with letters or figures.

'An index-letter, N, is situated on the outside of the frame, and a slot, P, is formed at one point of the bearing in frame A corresponding with that in the sleeve L. The key (1 is made long enough to engage with both of the slots Z and P at once when they are brought into line and the draw-bar Dis drawn back.

The frame 'A is made with adetachable part, a, firmly secured thereto by the rivets a. IndeX-letters R are also marked on the frame and on the loose part a in connection with the disk 9.

In order to withdraw the locking-bar D, which secures the bolt, the tumblers G, H, I,

. and F must be turned relatively to the frame "A and to one another, so that the keys 6, e, e, and e* may simultaneously slide into their respective slots a, 9 h, and Z when the lock ing-bar is pulled back. This position is indicated by a certain combinationof the letters and figures which then come into line,

and can be variously arranged and altered figures on the end plates. The locking-bar are in such a position with regard to the frame A that the key d can slide into the slots land P. This position 'is-indicated by a certain the tumbler on the sleeve L. When the key d can slide into the slots Z and P, the draw-bar D can'be drawn back, andwith it the bolt B, thus relieving the hasp O, with the hooked end of which the said bolt engages.

My combination-lock can be modified t make it suitable for doors of safes or shutters by leaving off the hasp and its attachments and continuing the bolt B through the side of the frame, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that it may engage with a plate let into the door-post, which then takes the place of the hasp.

Having thus described my invention, wha

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the part I), having grooves b, with the part b, sliding within it and having a slotted portion, b and flanges b and the spring I), forming the bolt B of the lock, substantially as described and shown,

and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination ofthe draw-barJD,

having a key, (1, and a head, d, with the sleeve L, provided with the slot Z, groove Z, 1

and the manysided projecting end Z, the pin Z, for retaining said sleeve in frame A, the tumbler M, and frame A,.having"the slotiP and index-letter N, substantially as described, shown, and set forth.

3. The combination of the bolt B when made in two parts, b and b, substantiallyas described, and provided with aspring, b, with the draw-bar D, having the key d and head (1*, the sleeve L, having the slot Z and manysided end Z the tumbler M, and frame A, having the slot P and index-letter N, substantially as described, shown, and set forth.

4. The combination, with the frameand locking-bar E, having a key, 0, of the-tum- ,bler G, having a central aperture, through which the locking-bar and its key may freely pass, and two disks on opposite sides of the tumbler and connected to it by holes andpins,

6. The combination of the locking-bar E, provided with an end, 6, engaging with a hole in the bolt B, and the key 6, the tumbler F,

provided with a boss, f, and screw f, the end plates, J and K, provided with overlapping; portions 9' and 7t, united by the screws j, and the frame A, provided with the fixed bar a, having a slot, at, the index-figures R, and notches a, for receiving the end plates, substantially as shown and described.

7. The combination of the hasp 0, bolt 13, made in two parts, the draw-bar D, provided with the sleeve L and tumbler M, the locking-bar E, provided with a series of tumblers, F, G, H, and I, the end plates, Jand K, united by the screw passing through their overlapping portions and 7c, and the frame A,

provided with the fixed bar a, notches a slots a and P, and index-letters N and R, substanti ally as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination, with the lock-frame and a sliding bolt, of aperpendicular movable locking-bar at right angles to the sliding bolt, adapted to engage the said bolt with its upper end, and provided with a tumbler projecting through the frame and having characters on its periphery, the lower end of the lockingbar projecting through the frame, substantially as set forth.

9. The combination, with the lock frame open at its bottom, the walls of the opening being recessed at a and the locking-bar E, extending through the same, of the end plates, J K, having overlapping portions j k, secured together and recessed to form an aperture for the locking-bar to pass through.
