OAR BRAKE.
No. 337,616. Patented Mar. 9, 1886.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BELLVILLE L. RANDALL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,616, dated March 9, 1836.
Application filed Oetober24.1885. Serial No.180,872. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BELLVILLE L. RAN- DALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of carbrakes in which two brake beams carrying the brake-shoes are swung simultaneously by means of a lever pivoted between the places of connecting the same by rods with said beams, and in which provision is also made for equalizing the pressure of the blzlkGSllOGS upon the car-wheels.
My invention consists in providing for a lateral movement of the pivot for the lever, preferably by pivoting the lever to a support or hanger which may slide, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of as much of a car and brake attachment embody ing my improvement as is need ful to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of carframe, taken ouline 1 1, Fig. 1, and shows a side view of parts of the brake mechanism. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the parts of Fig.
1 inverted.
The frame (composed of the longitudinal pieces a, transverse pieces I), c, and d) and the wheels A, having axles f, may be those of any car or car-truck. Each pair of brakeshoes B is fastened to a brake-beam, C, which is hung to the frame of the car or cartruck by means of links 9 in the usual manner. At or near the center of each brake-beam O is connected a rod, 71, which has a pivoted connection with a lever, D. Between the places of-connecting the rods h with the lever the latter is pivoted at i to a support or hanger, E. By means of the leverD the brake-beams may be simultaneously swung to cause the brakeshoes to press upon the wheels, rodsj extending from the outer ends of the lever D to the ordinary devices by which the power is applied. I fasten a socket, F, for each end of the support or hanger E to a transverse I the pivot of the lever D has been suspendedby links whereby it may swing; but such construction I do not consider of such practical utility as that of my invention, since it is desirable that this hanger should be held as stable as possible while providing for the lateral movement, as and for the purpose above specified.
I claim as my invention- In a carbrake, the combination of the lever D, connected with the brake-beams substantially as specified, a support or hanger, E, to which said lever is pivoted, and sockets F, in which said support or brace may slide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
BELLVILLE L. RANDALL.
