ANDREW SCHMIDT AND CHARLES REVERCOMB, OF \VlNNlPEG, MANITOBA,
' CANADA.
REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,523, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed October 20, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ANDREW SCHMIDT and CHARLES REvERcoMB, both of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Hose-Reel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to construct a hose-reel upon which the hose will be automatically wound by running the cart back over the line of hose; and to this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 15 drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side view of our improved reel, one of the cart-wheels being removed to disclose the construction and arrangement of the chains and chain-wheels, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus.
Referring now to the general construction of the reel and cart, A represents the axle, which is bent downward from the inner end of each journal 13 B, to cross the machine and afford a space within which the reel may be revolved. The shafts D D are mounted on springs E E, that are rigidly secured to the axle A. These shafts support the seat F and project to the rear, where they carry bearings for a shaft, G, to which four sprocket-wheels, a, b, c, and d, are fixed.
The reel proper, which consists of a drum having side plates, 6 e, is fast upon a shaft, I, which rides in bearings ff upon the shafts D D. The shaft I carries two sprocketwheels, (shown at N N,) which'are connected with the wheels I) and c of the shaft G by chains h h.
Upon each of the journals B B there is a loose sleeve, n, which carries a sprocketwheel, M, said sprocket-wheels being connected by chains h h with the wheels (1 and d of the shaft G. The outer ends of the sleeves n n and the inner ends of the hubs of the wheels K K are notched to form a clutch, 0, when the parts are brought together, the position of the sleeves upon the journals being Serial No. 190,453. (No model.)
controlled by levers P P, which are pivotally connected to lugs p 1), that are secured to the shafts D D. The lower ends of these levers are forked, and the forked ends rest in the groove of grooved collars 0 0, that are fixed on the sleeves n n. The upper arms of the levers .P P rest against racks o 12, that project outward from the seat-box, said racks be ing notched, as at t i, so that the levers may be held in position to throw the clutch in or out of engagement.
When the machine is drawn forward, and the clutches O O arein engagement, the sprocket-whcels M M will be rotated, and will impart a rotary motion to the shaft G through the medium of the chains h h and wheels a and ti, and as the wheels 0 and b are fast upon the shaft G they in turn will impart a rotary motion to the reel 0 through the medium of the chains h h and the wheels N N, thereby winding up the hose.
Such a hose-reel as has been described may be used with a great saving of time, which in some casesis an extremely valuable point, and as the construction is extremely simple the parts are not likely to get outof order.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a hose-reel, the combination, with a bent axle, wheels mounted thereon, and thills supported on springs secured to the axle, of a reel mounted in bearings on the thills, directly over the axle, and mechanism for operating the reel from the wheels, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a hose-reel, the combination, with bent axle, wheels thereon, and having notched hubs and thills supported by said axle, of a reel journaled in bearings on the thills, above the axle, sprocket-wheels on the ends of the reel, a shaft journaled in the rear ends of the thills, sprocket-wheels on the said shaft, sliding and notched sleeves on the axle, sprocketwheels thereon, drive-chains, and a lever for operating the sleeves, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. A hose-reel consisting of the bent axle A, the wheels B, having notched hubs, the
thills D, supported on springs E, secured to lever P, and the catch 12, substantially as herethe axle, the reel 0, jOlllllZl-lQd in the thills in shown and described. above the axle and provided with sprocketn wheels N N, the shaft G, journaled in the 5 rear ends of the thills and provided with the x sprocket-wheels a b c d, the notched sleeves W'itnesses:
01, sliding on the axle, and provided with; J. H. D. MUNSON, sprocket-wheels M, the chains /1 h, the forked J. OBED SMITH.
