JAMES J. LARGENT, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB OF TVO-THIRDS TO THOMAS R. DANIELS AND MICHAEL WILZ, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,508, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed December 7, 18H5. Serial No. 184,906. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. LARGENT, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Car- Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionr thereof, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference re- 1o fer to like parts, and in which- Figure l represents a sectional view at X X in Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a sectional view at Y Y in Fig. 3; Fig. 3, ahorizontal section at Z Zin Fig. 2.
This invention is in the line of car-couplings i5 in which the ordinarylink and pin is employed, and the pin is held by a movable prop in the draw-head, so that as a link enters the drawhead the prop is pushed back thereby and the pin permitted to drop into the link.
My invention relates especially to the following points: irst, the construction of a retractible or repressible guide for directing the low-hanging link up into the draw-head; second, to means for holdingthelinkatasuitable height to enter another draw-head; third, the
combining with my guide of a removable pinprop.
To carry out designs I form the interior of the draw-head with an outwardly downward- 3o sloping bottom, upon which the telescopic guide can easily slide, and provide said guide with projections enabling the pin and link to be held thereby, as desired.
In the drawings,H represents the draw-head,
formed with the interior sloping bottom, H.
A is the telescopic guide resting upon said inclined bottom H', and Bis theprop projecting up from said guide, for supporting the pin P, as in Fig. l. The front edge of the'prop B is 4o made to overhang its base,so as to form one or more link-receiving cavities, G,for holding the .link L, as shown in Fig. 2., The upper end of the telescopic guide A is longitudinally slot ted, as shown in Fig. 3, and through this Aslot D is passed the bolt E, for holding the said guide in the draw-head.
I sometimes make the upper partition, H2, ofthe draw-head removable by means oftransversely-dovetailed edges, as represented in 5o Figs. l and 2, and hold the same in place by means of the bolt E. By having this partition removed the inclined bottom H can be more easily smoothed in finishing up the draw-head after it is cast.
In making my coupling all that is necessary to be done after finishing up the castings is to slide the telescopic guide A backward up into the interior ofthe draw-head, and t0 pass the bolt E down through the slot D.
In using my car-coupling,when it is desired 6o to couple with anotherdraw-head from which a link is hanging, the pin P is raised untilthe telescopic guide A slides down to its lowest position, at which it is held by the end of theslot D' coming against the bolt E. The pin being 65 now released, it rests upon the prop B. The other draw-head, approaching its link, which may be hanging quitelow therefrom, meets the telescopic guide A, and is directed up the sloping face thereof until it comes against the prop 7o B. Thisimpact of the incoming link with said prop pushes the latter and thetelescopicguide formed therewith back and up until said prop is away from under the pin P, which at once drops and enters thelink. The coupling being ythus formed, the coupling-heads ordraw-heads are permitted to come against each other by the play which is given to the telescopic guide A, for the slot D in the end D of said guide I make sufficiently long to enabletheguideto be 8o pushed entirely into its draw-head. This repression of the guide may be done by the impact thereagainst of the other draw-head, or by the pressure of the link againsttheprop B. It' it is desired to couple this draw-head with 85 another some little higher, the end of thelink L is inserted into one or thc other ofthe cavities C, as in Fig. 2, with the pin down. To have the link held up quite high, the lower ot' said cavities is used, and if not so high the upper. 9o The link is held by means of the slight elevation Ojust in front of said cavities, forming the fulcrum, and the roof of the. cavities becoming the weight to hold the inner end ofthe link down and its outer end up.
I am aware that prior to my invention a carcoupling. has been formed with an inclined interior and a pin-prop movable thereon, so that I do not claim the same, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and for roo which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to Wit:
l. In near-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head having;` the bottom ot' its interior downwardlyinclined to its month, 0l' the telescopic guide easily movable upon Said inclined bottom, and adapted to have its lower extremity project down and ont from the month of the drawfhead, and to, be` moved loaek np therein, whereby to receive and `guide a link np into the draw-head, as set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head having the bottom ofits interior inclined, as set forth, of' the telescopic guide easily movable on said inclined bottom and having the longitudinal Slot, andthe bolt in said slot for limiting the displacement of said guide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
