PATENT OFFICE. 1
OF REINBECK, IOWA.
PLATFORM FOR HANDLING STOCK.
nPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,425, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed August 10, 1885. Serial No. 173,902. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. JAMES D. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Reinbeck, in the county of Grundy and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platforms for Handling Stock, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to devices for handling live stock; and it consists of the combination of an inclined gangway, a swingingplatform, and an inclined Wagon-way and platform, all attached to and supported by a portable frame, constructed and arranged as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my devices. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a back elevation with the hinged platform closed. Fig. 4 is a back elevation with the hinged platform open.
A designates supporting-sills,provided with the upright posts a a, b b, c c, and G G. These sills and posts are all firmly framed or otherwise jointed together and constitute the supporting portable frame of the chute and platforms.
B designates a wagon-platform, and a is an inclined way leading to and affording easy ascent for a wagon from the ground onto the platform.
E is a platform securely fastened to a post, F, which is hinged at b" to the post G. This hinged platform is provided with guard-rails d, which are fastened to the postF, and to the guard-posts d, and has a side gate, L. The free end of the platform E rests, when open, on the support G, which is fastened to the posts b b, and when closed on the support D, which is attached to the posts a c.
H is an inclined way, provided with guardrails o which are fastened to the posts a a and G G. This inclined way is attached at the bottom to the front sill, A, of the frame, and at the top to the posts G G, and leads from the ground to the open end of the swinging platform E.
When stock is to be unloaded from a wagon, the platform E is swung around against one side of the chute, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The loaded wagon is then driven on and partly over the platform B, and the platform E is then closed, its open end being in line with the chute, and its side gate in line with the tail end of the wagon K, which is placed closely against the side'of the platform. The tail-gate of the wagon is then removed and the animals allowed to pass out of the wagon onto and over the platform E, and down the inclined way to the yard.
In loading stock the swinging platform and the wagon or car to be loaded occupy the same relative positions as above stated, and the stock is driven up the inclined-way over the platform E and out through gate L into the wagon or car.
The chute and platforms being attached to and supported by the frame which is firmly jointed together as set forth, it is evident that the whole structure may be readily carried by hand, or otherwise conveyed from place to place, as required.
I am aware that heretofore devices for handling live stock have been constructed with inclined ways and hinged platforms, and I do not claim such a device, broadly, but
- What I claim as new is A portable device for handling live stock, consisting of the supporting-sills A and posts G G, the inclined way 0?, the platform B, the
platform E, hinged to swing horizontally and provided with the guard-rails d and the side gate, L, the supports 0 D, and the inclined way H, leading to the hinged platform, all at tached to the portable frame, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES D. MORRISON.
Witnesses:
JOHN R. STEWART, PETER D. MoELLER.
