WATER-CLOSET CISTERN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,359, dated March 9, 1886.

Be it known that I, THOMAS BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Closet Oisterus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists of an improved siphon contrivance, in connection with what are known as pull water-closets, whereby the flushing of the basin may be effected equally as well as or better than with avalve, and the more reliable and durable siphon contrivance may be substituted for the valve in such closets, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of the cistern and part of the basin, showing the application of my improved siphon contrivance; and Fig. 2 is a section of part of Fig. l on line 00 as.

I extend the pipe a, through which the water flows from the cistern 1) into the basin 0, up through the bottom of the cistern, into the same nearly as high as the level of the water therein when full, and suspend the tube 6, of considerably larger diameter, and having the upper end closed and the lower end open, over the said pipe from a weighted lever, f, which raises said tube normally, but is connected by the chain g and lever h, or other approved contrivance, with the pull-rod r, so that when the pull is lifted to empty the pan said tube 6 will be caused to descend in the water, as indicated by the dotted lines. In

this tube'e, which hangs normally as low as the level to which the water is to be drawn each time the basin is to be used, I arrange and connect to it another tube, j, closely fitting tube a, but capable of sliding up and down along it, and extending a short distance above the upper end of tube a, and also above the water-level when the cistern is filled and the tube 0 hangs in its normal position, the connection with tube 6 being by arms k, a1- lowing the water-level to be the same inside and outside of said tube. With this simple contrivance the upper end of tube j is caused to descend to the level of the upper end of tube a, or a little lower, when the pull-handle is raised, which, being a little lower than the surface of the water, allows a stream of water to be set in motion down tube a, the suction of which stream continues the flow over the top of tubej after the release of the pull, and the consequent rise of tubes 6 and j, until the Water falls to the level of the lower end of tube 0, which breaks the siphon and terminates the flow.

The tube e may be suspended higher or lower from the leverf, according as more or less water is to be discharged.

I claim as my invention- The combination, with the pipe at, extended up in the cistern, of the tubej, fitted to slide thereon, and arranged in and connected to the tube 6, closed at the upper end and sus pended from the weighted leverf, connected with the pull-rod of the closet, substantially as described.
