CARTRIDGE-LOADING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 336,676, dated February 23, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONIDAS H. VAN SYOKLE, of Fort Lee, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Cartridge-Loaders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is for supplying into a cartridge shell or case powder and then a wad, and
' then introducing shot, the shot and powder being measuredfor determining the proper quantity.
Before my invention cartridge-loading irnplements had been manufactured for introducing powder and then shot.
My improvement is for simplifying the con struction of the parts and for accurately measuring the powder and shot, respectively, and for facilitating the insertion of the wads between the powder and shot and at the end of the case, respectively.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the loading apparatus complete. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same with the ramnier in section. Fig. 3 is a section vertically through the holder for shot. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan at the line or w of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the plunger and cartridge-case. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the holder for the wad. Fig. 7 is a sectional plan through the shot-measure above the valve. Fig. 8 is a similar section through the powder-measure. Fig. 9 is a rear view of the powder-measure; and Fig. 10 isaseparate view of the swinging base for the cartridge-case.
I provide a vertical tube, A, within which is a plunger, B, with a suitable head for driw ing the plunger down and ramming the powder or the wad into the cartridgecase. G. The tube A is supported by an arm or bracket, A, projecting from a frame or plate, A and the lower portion of the tube A is removed at one side to allow for the insertion or removal of the cartridgecase O, and there is a swinging base, D, forming a support for the cartridgecase. This base D is turned aside upon the pivot d, to allow the cartridge-case to be easily inserted or removed, and this swinging base D is passed in beneath the cartridge case to raise the same and hold it up into place; and with this object in view the swinging base D is made with a segmental wedge, 01, for raising the cartridge -ease as the swinging base is turned, audit is preferable to make the swinging base with a cavity beneath the fulrninate or cap, so that there will not be any pressure against the cap while charging the cartridge. The plunger Bis made with a groove, b, at one side, and in this groove there is a camshaped piece, I), and E is a spring connected upon the outside of the tube A, and the end of this spring passes into the grooveb, and said spring will sustain the plunger B when the cam bpasses up beyond the end of said spring E; but the spring yields to the action of the cam when the plunger is driven down. The stop-finger 1), upon the tubeA,in a groove in said plunger, prevents the plunger being drawn out of the tube A.
At one side of the tube A, and parallel with and attached to the same, isa cylinder, F,that is open at the top end and is slotted longitudinally, and said cylinder F rests at its lower end upon a plate, f, to which it is attached. The vertical tube A has an opening in the side in line with the surface of the platef, and there are springfingers 6 connected with the lower end of the cylinder F, which fingers yield to allow a wad to be pressed into the cylinder A from off the plate f, and they hold the wad by its edges until the plunger is driven down upon the wad to carry it down into the cartridgecase 0. This plate f is slotted in a line with the center of the tube A, and the springing wad-pusher G passes,a-t its upper end,througl1 this slot. This wadpu er G is in the form of a lever, pivoted at g and thrown back by the spring h. The wads themselves are of ordinary character, and the spring wad'carrier H is in the form of a thin sheet-metal tube, open longitudinally at one side, and provided with clips or finger-pieces h, projecting near one end. The other end, h", of the wad-carrier is closed. The wads themselves are thrown into this carrier and pressed toward the closed end h, so as to lie in theirproper relative positions, and this carrier forms a gage by which to de tect washers that may be of the wrong thickness, by counting the numbers that lie side by side in said carrier. The finger-pieces h are grasped and compressed,so that the wads themselves are held from falling out of the carrier while the carrier is inverted and passed into the slotted cylinder F, the wads are thus brought to the proper position to form apile of wads, the lower one of which rests upon the plate f, and such bottom wad of said pile can be carried off laterally whenever required, by moving the wad-carrier H, which forces the Wad along between the spring fingers 0 into the tube A, immediately over the upper end of the cartridge-case C, so that said wad can be forced down into said cartridge-case by the plunger B.
The hopper or holder K is for powder, and the hopper or holder L is for shot. Below the powder-hopper K is a vertical measure, It, and there is a similar measure, 1, below the shot-hopper. The pipe leads the powder from the measure 70 to an opening at one side of the tube A, and a similar pipe, 1, leads the shot from the measure to an opening at the opposite side of the tube A. In the bottom of thehopperK is aswinging cut-offln, which is immediately below the hopper bottom of said powder-holder K, and there is a spring, a, to move this cut-off back from beneath the opening at the bottom of the hopper K. The powder measure It is beneath the opening in the hopper and also below the swinging cut-off a. At one side of this measure k is a vertical slot, through which passes a plate of metal, 0, and upon this plate 0 is a valve, 0, of a size adapted to form a bottom to the measure k when turned up horizontally, and around the outside of the measure k is a sliding band, 0', having a pivot wire or pin, 2, passing through the plate 0, and upon which pivot the valve 0 can be swung. This band 0 can be raised or lowered, and with it the valve 0, so as to vary the capacity of the powder-measure, and this band 0 is held in the position to which it may be adjusted by a spring, 3, attached to the band 0, and springing into notches at the corner of the pen der-measure, as seen in Fig. 9. There is a bent lever, P, pivoted upon the band 0", and one end of this bent lever is connected with the plate 0 by a pin passing through a hole in that plate, and there is a spring, 1), that acts against the lever P to hold the same in its normal position and to close the valve 0. This lever B is acted upon by the swinging cut-oft'a after the cut-off has closed the openingat the bottom end of the powder hopper K, so that the powder has been cut off from the hopper, the bent lever B is swung, and the valve 0 tipped to discharge the powder from the measure, and allow it to run from the measure by the pipe it into the tube A and the cartridge-case at the bottom of the same.
The hopper L for the shot and the measure below the same are provided-With a swinging valve, q, upon a plate, q,-that is pivoted to a band, q", around the shot-measure Z, and r is a bent lever that acts upon the valve 1 to tip the same and discharge the shot from the measure 1 into the tube Z, so that said shot runs into the vertical tube A and the cartridgecase placed at the bottom of the same. These parts are constructed and operate substantially the same as those which have been described V for measuring and supplying the powder. The
band q and valve q may be adjusted by a movable pin passing through holes in a vertical plate, q, fastened to the bottom of the hopper L. It is, however, important to prevent the shot obstructing the movement of the cut-off s. I therefore combine with the hopper L and cut-off a spring finger, it, formed of a loop of wire extending downward into the opening at the bottom of the shot hopper L, and this spring finger is just above the surface of the cut-off s, and it loosens and supports any shot that might otherwise be immediately adjoining the point where the cutoff finally closes against the lower edge of the hopper, and prevents a shot becoming wedged into such opening as the cutoff is closed.
Graduations may be engraved or marked upon the surface of the measures To Z to indicate the quantity of powder or shot.
I am aware that a yielding finger has been applied at the surface of the slide to allow the shot to pass beneath it, and that this has been located outside the hopper and also between the hopper and the slide. lVhen placed within the hopper, as in my present improvement, it serves to prevent shot passing from the hopper down at the edge of the plate that forms the slide.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination, with the tube A and plunger B, of the swinging base D, having a segmental wedge, d, for raising and holding the cartridge-case C at the lower end of the tube A, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the vertical tube A and plunger B, of the slotted cylinder F, attached to the vertical tube A, the slotted wadcarrier H, the slotted plate f, to support the wads, the spring-fingers 6, attached to the stationary cylinder F, and having their spring ends at opposite sides of the tube A, and the swinging wad-pusher G, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the tube A, plunger B, cylinder F, and pusher G, of the wadcarrier H, made as a slotted spring-tube having projecting finger-pieces h and a closed end, h substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the pusher B and the vertical tube A,open at the lower end for the reception of the cartridge-case, of the slotted cylinder F, attached to the cylinder A, the slotted plate 1'', the wad-pusher G, and the movable wad carrier H, adapted to being placed within the tube F, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the hopper for powder or shot and the swinging cut-01f for the same, of a vertical measuring-tube beneath the hopper, a plate passing through a slot at one side of the measure, a swinging valve upon the said plate, a band around the measure, and the pivot upon which the said plate and valve swing,and a bent lever pivoted upon the band and acted upon by the cut-off for moving the valve, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the tube A and plunger B, of separate hoppers K L, for powder and shot, the separate inclined tubes is Z,

attached to the tube A, the removable wadholder H, the plate f, and pusher G, substantially as specified.
7. The combination, with the vertical tube A and plunger B, of the slotted cylinder F, slotted wad-carrier H, the slotted plate f, to support the wad, the spring-fingers 0, attached to the tube F, the swinging wad-pusher G in the form of a lever,and apivot for the same at its lowest end, and a spring, h, to return said pusher to its normal position, substantially as 20 the swinging bent levers and their springs, the
plates, the measures 10 Z, the movable bands 0 Q2 around the measures, and pivots on such bands upon which the plates and val ves swing, and means for holding the bands when adjusted to regulate the powder and shot discharged, respectively, substantially as specified.
9. The combination, with the hopper for holding shot and the cut-01f slide at the bottom, of the yielding finger if, within the hopper with its end adjacent to the delivery-opening in the hopper to prevent the shot obstructing the slide as it is closed, substantially as specified.
