MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,627, dated February 23,1886.

Be it known that we, GEORGE GEoMPToN and HORACE WYMAN, both of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massa- 5 chusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mechanical Movements, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel mechanism whereby the end of a lever or rod may be reciprocated or moved for different distances in one or the other direction and be left at rest in either one of several different defined positions, the time occupied in the movement of the leveror rod being the same, whether it is made to pass from one to its next position or from one to the other of its extreme positions.
In the mechanical movement herein described we employ three levers, which we have denominated, respectively, as the main le- Yer, the auxiliary lever, and the prime lever, the auxiliary lever havingits fulcrum upon the main leverand the prime lever hav' ing its fulcrum upon the auxiliary lever, each of the said levers being joined by connectingrods with a crank upon a disk or gear, which is moved a little more than a semi-rotation in one and then in the opposite direction bygearing, the said gearing in practice being such as represented in United States Patent No. 281,812, dated July 24, 1883.
Figure 1 in side elevation represents a mechanical movement embodying our-invention; Fig. 2, a right-hand end View of Fig. 1;and Figs. 3 to 8 are diagrams representing the levers to be described, with the cranks and con necting-rods in diiferent positions.
The board A, which may be any suitable frame-work, has mounted upon it a stud, a, which serves as the fulera for the main lever b, the upper end of which has jointed to it a connecting-rod, I), joined to a crank-pin on a disk or gear, b mounted loosely on a shaft or stud, b secured to the board or frame A. The main lover I) at one end has a pin or stud, If, which constitutes the fulcra for the auxiliary lever c, jointed at its upper end to the con- 0 necting-rod 0, one end of which is placed over the crank-pin c of the disk or gear 0 also placed loosely upon the shaft or stud b. The opposite end of the auxiliary lever c, or the end which is not joined to the connecting-rod c, has a pin or stud, c, which constitutes the fulcrum for the primeleverd, one end of which, by pin d, isjointed to the connecting-rod d, in turn attached to a crank'pin, d", of a disk or gear, 01, also mounted loosely upon the shaft or stud Z)".
.In practice the disks b c d will be toothed, as represented by the toothed wheels, (lettered gin the patent referred to,) and the said toothed gear will be rotated for a little more than half a rotation in one and then in the other direction by means of gears, as shown in the said patent.
In Fig. 1 the lower end of the prime lever 02 has attached to it a cord or flexible connection, e,which,extended over the sheave e, is attached to a slide-rod, c fitted to slide in guides c c.
In Fig. 1 the line marked 0 represents what may be called a station, and the spaces lto 6, inclusive, marked upon the rod indicate six different steps, any one of which may be placed 5 opposite the station 0 by a movement of the levers b, c, and d in one or the other direction, or altogether in the same direction.
In the drawings the step 3 is placed opposite the station 0.
In Fig. 1 we have also shown by the numbers 1 to 6 the six different positionsin which the free end of the primeleverd may beplaced and held. To place the free end of the lever d in the position 6, or the step 6 of the rod 0 opposite the station 0, all the levers b, c, and (I will have their upper ends thrown fully to the left, as in the diagram Fig. 8. To place the free end of the lever d in the position number 1, or the step 1 opposite the station 0, all the 0 levers b, c, and (I will have their upper ends moved fully to the right, as in the diagram Fig. 8. To place the free end of the lever d in the position designated by 5, or the step 5 of the rod 0* opposite the station 0, the disk or gear all will be rotated substantially one-half a revolution, thus carrying to the right that end of the lever d which is attached to the connecting-rod (i as in the diagram Fig. 4. To place the free end of thelever d in the position I03 designated by the number 4, or the step 4 of the rod 6 opposite the station 0, the end of the lever cjoined to the connecting-rod 0 will be moved into its farthest position to the right, the ends of the levers b and (I joined to the connecting-rods b and (1 being held to the left, as in the diagram Fig. 5. To place the free end of the lever din the position number 3, or the step 3 opposite the station 0, thelevers will be moved into the position designated by Fig. l and by the diagram Fig. 6. To place the end of the lever d in the position number 2, or the step 2 of the rod e opposite the station 0, the end of the lever (I joined to the connectingrod (2 will be moved into itsfarthest positions to the left, and the ends of the levers b and 0 joined, respectively, to the connecting-rods b and 0 will be moved into their position farthest to the right, as in Fig. 7.
The herein-described mechanical movement, consisting of the main lever mounted upon a fulcrum, a, the auxiliary lever 0, having its fulcrum upon the main lever, and the prime lover (I, having its fulcrum upon the auxiliary lever, combined with cranks and connectingrods to engage the said levers, whereby the free end of the prime lever d may be placed in any one ofsiX different positions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
