ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-SERVICE CONDUITS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,573, dated February 23, 1886. Application filed January 6, 1886. Serial No. 187,775. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JULIUs LEEDE, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, and JOHN LAWSHE, of Colton, San Beruardino county, in the State of California, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for GasService Conduits; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to attachments for gas-conduits, and is specially designed for use in connection with conduits for natural gas; and its object is to avoid or prevent explosions, as well as to limit the extent and effects thereof.
As natural gas-such as obtained from the natural gas wells of Pittsburg and other places in Pennsylvania-has no smell, the burners may be turned on, or thejoints of the gas fixtures and pipes may leak, without the knowledge of the occupants of the structure to be lighted, and the rooms may be filled with gas, so that an explosion is liable to take place at any time. To avoid this danger, and to limit the extent or effects of an explosion, we introduce to the conduit an enlarged section of the character shown in the drawing, in which the figure is a section of a portion of gasconduit with our improvements connected therewith.
A is the gas main or pipe, and B is a bulb or enlarged part. This bulb B is filled with any good absorbent, rotten willow being preferred, and has attached to it a cup or reservoir, O, analogous in construction to an automatic lubricator or oil-cup. Gasoline or other odoriferous liquid is supplied to the absorbent through the oil-cup-like reservoir, or in other suitable way, so as to saturate such absorbent. As the inodorous gas passes through the bulb charged with gasoline or other odoriferous liquid, it becomes impregnated with a smell by which the occupants of a structure are notified of a leak in the pipes or joints. In this way explosions as well as waste are avoided. This enlarged section or bulb Bis usually placed in the conduit leading from the main in the street to the house or structure to be lighted, although it may obviously be introduced at any point in the service. A convenient means of connecting the pipes or the mains and the bulb-section is shown in the drawing.
At the opposite ends of the bulb, and between it and the ends of the pipe, and across the mouth of the oil-cup, we clamp or otherwise secure diaphragms of wire-gauze, a a, to prevent the passage of flame into, through, or beyond the bulb. By this means the effects of an explosion are limited. For example, if an explosion takes place within a structure leading from the main -service conduit, it would be cut off and be confined to such structure. If, on the other hand, an explosion took place in the main, it would be cut off from the houses or service leading from the main.
The absorbent in the bulb will operate as a cushion to protect and prevent the destracti on of the gauze at the end opposite an explosion.
Having described our invention, what we claim is The combination, with a gas-service conduit, of an interposed bulb or section containing absorbent material for holding odorizing substances, and gauze diaphragms for confining the absorbent and limiting the effects of explosions, and a cup or reservoir, 0, for odoriferous liquid, substantially as described.
