SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,305, dated February 16,1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, GEORGEERTEL, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to presses for baling hay, straw, or other material, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eifective arrangement of devices by which the power applied at the sweep is made to operate the plunger in the press-box.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations ofparts of the power-connections between the sweep and the plunger, all as hereinafter fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of a portion of a baling-press embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement, and shows the press-box in horizontal section.
The metal head A, to which the sweep B is connected by the pivot pin or bar O,has elongated bosses or hubs a a at each side, which extend to the upper and lower metal plates D D, which are secured to the top and bottom frames EEof the press, and through the pressframe and the hubs a a and main body of the head A is passed a heavy spindle or bolt, F, by which thehead and its sweepBare pivoted to the press-frame, so as to be swung in horizontal plane. A brace, G, hung on the pivotbolt F, and held by asuitable bracket or catch, g, to the sweep, holds the latter up at the outer end in properoperative position.
At the center of the rounded part A of the head A is fastened by a pin or bolt, h, one end of a chain, H, and the other end of the chain is connected by a pin or bolt, h, to the back end of the pitman I, by which the follower J is forced forward in the pressbox K to form the bale, as presently explained. The chain H enters a groove, a, in the edge of the head A as the sweep is turned to either side of the press-frame. The sweep-head A has a semiannular vertically-ranging opening, a",within which turns freely the hub or sleeve portion Z of the metal yoke L, which is pivoted to the top and bottom parts of the press-frame by a heavy pin or bolt, M, which passes through its hub Z. The upper and lower arms Z and Z of the yoke L extend, respectively, above and below the pitman I, to which they are pivoted by a pin or bolt N at a point a little forward of the end of the pitman to which the chain H is attached. Thus arranged, the sweep-head A and yoke L have free independent movement on their respective pivots F M.
In operating the press, as the sweep B is moved in the direction of the arrow or in Fig. 2 from a position at a right angle to the press frame or case to a position in line therewith, and indicated in Fig. 1, the follower J will be forced forward to press the material in the box K, and as the motion of the sweep carries the pitman I past the longitudinal center of the press just after the follower receives its extreme forward movement the expansion of the pressed material in the box K against the follower will carry it back, and the pitman I and chain H will be thrown to the position indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 2,ready for the returnstroke ot'the sweep, which movement will again force the follower forward, as will readily be understood. Passing the hub or sleeve Z of yoke L through the opening a of the sweephead A not only allows the head and yoke to have free independent movement on their respective pivots, but this arrangement of parts provides for a greater length of stroke of the pitman and follower for a given radius of the sweep than can be secured by other constructions. Furthermore, the passage of the yokehub through the sweep-head allows the hub to be extended to fit between the upper and lower parts of the press-frame, whereby the yoke has a very substantial and steady support in the press-frame, and whereby also the yoke-pivot M will not be cut by the swinging of the yoke on it, and by making the sweep-head A with the bosses at a fitting between the top and bottom parts of the frame the sweeppivot F will not be out by the turning of the sweep on it, and the head and sweep will have substantial support in operative positions.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a bailing-press and with the steep-head A, pivoted at F to the press-frame and provided with the semi-annular opening a the pitman I, and the chain H, connected to lhe sweep-head at 7L and to the beam at h, substantially as specified, of the yoke L, pivoted on a pin, M, passing through the opening a of the sweep-head and pivoted at N to the pitman, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
- 2. In a balingpress, the pivoted sweep-head A, provided with an opening, (1 in combination with the yoke L, formed in one piece with a hub, Z, pivoted on a bolt, M. passing through the head-opening a and with arms Z l and connections,substantially as specified, between the sweep-head, pitman, and yoke, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In a baling-press, the combination, with the sweep-head A, pivoted to the press-frame and provided with an opening, a", of the yoke L, pivoted by its hub Z on a pin, M, passing through the sweep-head opening a", and said hub Z fitting between the top and bottom parts of the press-frame, and connections, substantially asspecified, between the sweep-head, pitman, and yoke, as and for the purposes set forth. In a baling-press, the combination of the sweep-head A, formed in one piece and pivoted on a pin, F, to the press-frame, and made with bosses at a fitting between the top and bottom parts of the press-frame, and provided with an opening, a the yoke L, formed in one piece with a hub, l, fitting between the top and bottom parts of the press-frame, and pivoted on a pin, M, passing through the head-opening a", and having arms Z Z the pitman I, a pin, N, pivoting the yoke to the beam, and a chain,
H, connected at h to the sweep-head and at' h to the pitman, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
