UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY L. FISHER, OF TLEDO, IOW-TA.
WEIGHING-SCAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,909, dated February 9, 1886.
Application tiled September 23, 1885. Serial No. 177,934. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY L. FIsHnR, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scales, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings isa representation of a perspective view of the scale complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the casings. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken through the opposite casing. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the scale.
This invention has relation to scales; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, M M designate the main sills, N, the platform, and O the incasenient or cover over the main and connecting levers, P Pdesignating the main levers, and Q designating the long connecting-lever suspended within the cover 0.
R designates one ofthe hooked blocks from which the long connecting-leverQis suspended within theincasementt), builtimmediately over the main sill M.
The outer ends of the main levers P P are provided 011 their under edges with knifeedge points P2, which rest on chilled cast bearings P, secured to the main sill and end walls of the incasement, so that said chilled east bearings P3 occupy the lower corners of the incasenient O, wherein they are securely bolted through their vertical and horizontal tlanges a I). N ear their outer ends the main levers P P are provided with supporting-links T, which engage supporting-hooks U, secured to the outer faces ofthe platform-sills V, near each end of the latter, a tie-rod, V', forming the lower fastenings for the supporting-hooks U. The platformNis provided with vertical side boards, XV XV, having inwardly and downwardly beveled upper edges which connect with the under edges of theinner walls of the incasements and protect the scale-works from water, snow, and dust. At the middle of the incasement O is rigidly secured a chilled cast slotted bearing-block, X, having seats X X', for the reception of the fulcrunis or knifeedge points X2 X2 in the under faces of the blocks X3 X4, which latter are securely bolted to the under sides of the main levers P P at their inner or meeting ends. y The long connectinglever Q is provided in its upper edge, about midway between its ends, with a knife-edge point, Q', which bears against the under face of the upper side of the slotted bearing-block X, which latter forms the fulcrum therefor, and the forward end of this long connecting lever Q is connected bya rod, Qf, to the scalebeam Q".
ln the .incasement O at the opposite side of the platform two main levers, similar to the main levers P P', are fulcrumed in the manner described for these latter levers; but instead of a long connecting-lever, Q, a short con necting-lever, S, is employed in connection with these levers P P', and this lever S may be located in the box immediately at the side of the platform, or it may be located at some dist-ance from the platform, if desired or necessary. The long connecting-lever Q and the short connecting-lever S are provided near their fulcral points with depending arms SS", respectively, which latter are connected by a tie-rod, S3, secured in seats in their lowerends. This tie-rod S is secured in place by set-screws S5, so that the arms S S2 may be adjusted thereon. Vith this construction inclined approaches are used to reach and leave the platform, and no pit is therefore needed where these scales are erected.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination, with the incaseinents, the chilled cast end bearings, the slotted iniddlc bearings, and the hooks secured to the covers of the incasements, of the main levers with supporting-links near their outer ends and knife-edge points at their inner ends, thehook-blocks, the long connecting-lever, the short connecting-lever, the tie-rods connect- IOO ing the platform-sills, and the supportinghooks secured to said platform-sills, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the incasements, 5 the chilled end bearings, the slotted middle bearings, and the hook-blocks connected to the covers of thc incasements, of the main 1evers with knife-edge bearings and supportinglinks, the short connecting-lever, the long conro meeting-lever, the scale-beam, the rod connect` ing the long and'short levers, and the platform with supporting-hooks, substantially as speciied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY L. FISHER.
