UNITED STATES PATENT OF IC WILLIAM L. HAAS, OF CHARLES CITY, IOWA.
TWINE AND WIRE C-UTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,582, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed May 15, i885. Serial No. 165,652. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NVILLIAM L. HAAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charles City, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine and lVire'Outters, of which the following is a description.
Figure l is a side view showing in dotted lines the motion of the cutter Fig. 2 is a similar View of a modification of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the lineww of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail showing the arrangement of the spring in the working-lever section.
My invention relates to wire and twine cutters, and it is designed to furnish a simple-and efficient tool for quickly cutting wire, twine, and other analogous attenuated bands or rods, and more particularly for cutting the wire,- straw, and twine bands employed for binding sheaves of wheat by automatic binders, or for cutting telegraph-wires; and it consists in the peculiarv construction and arrangement of parts. as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, A A represent two sections of one of the levers of my wire-cutter, which are screwed or otherwise fastened together, and form a hollow head at a and a handle at b.
B is the other lever, which is fulcrumed to the lever A at c, and is also provided with a cutting-edge at d.
In the head of the sectional lever A, just below lever B, is fulcrumed at e a rearwardlypointed jaw, 0, having a cutting-edge at d, which cooperates with the cutting-edge d, and for which purpose the jaw G is jointed at f to the head of lever B at a point below the fulcrum c of the latter.
Between the sectional lever A and the lever B is arranged a spring, a, that forces the two handles of the wire-cutter away from each other, the said spring being held in place by being seated in a slot of lever B, as shown in Fig. 4:, and arranged to bear at its lower edges upon shoulders t of the section A, as in Fig. 3.
Now, in using this band-cutter, the handle I) of lever Ais grasped withthe thumb resting on top of lever B, the spring meanwhile holding the two apart and holding the movable jaw 0 down. Now, upon pressing the lever B down, thejointf causes the motion of B to throw jaw 0 up and bring its cutting-edge d into engagement with cutting-edge d above, to bisect the wire lying between them. rearwardly pointing opening of the knife forms a hook, that renders the action of engaging the wire band by the operator at once easy and certain.
In modifying my invention the point of the hook, instead of being formed by the lower movable jaw, C, may be formed by a rigid portion. 9, of the head of the lever-sections A, as in Fig. 2. I may also make the lever A in one piece, as shown in this figure,'and construct its head hollow by coring in casting or milling it out for the reception of the end of lever B and jaw O.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A wire-cutter consisting of a handle-section having ahollow head, an upper leversection fulcrumed in said head and having a cutting-edge on its lower surface, and a rearwardly-pointing movable jaw fulcrumed in the hollow head, and jointed also to the leversection below its fulcrum, and a spring for holding the two sections apart, as described.
2. The lever B, having a slot in its head, with spring 00 lodged therein, in combination with the handle-section A, as and for the purpose described.
3. A Wire-cutter consisting of twojointed handle-sections, one having a knife-edge, and a rearwardly-pointing movable jaw having a knife-edge and jointed to both the two handlesections, substantially as shown and described.
4. The two sections A A, forming a hollow head and a handle, in combination .with a lever-section, B, fulcrumed in the hollow head of sections A A, and having a knife-edge, d, and the rearwardly-pointing jaw 0, having cutting-edge d, and fulcrumed to both the sections A and B, as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM L. HAAS.
