UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUBERT FRITZ NEUSS, OF AIX-LA-CHAPELLE, GERMANY.
SAFETY-PIN.
.5PEOIFICA'JJION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334:.541, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed August 11, 1885. Serial No. 174.095.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be 'it known that I, HUBERT F. NEUss, of AiX-la-Chapelle, Germany, have invented an Improved Safety-Pin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refer- 8.108 being made to the accompanying drawings, and for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, No. 25,701, dated May 23, 1883.
Figure 1 shows a pin and its point-protecting collar, said collar being removed from said pin, and being partly in section" Fig. 2 shows a side view of the pin and its collar, thelatter being removed from the pin. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the collar placed on a pin. Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line :0 as, Fig. 2.
This invention relates to improvements in safety-pins, in which the point of the pin is protected by being surrounded by a detachable collar or tube.
It consists in compressing one end ofa small metallic tube at one or more points of its circumference, which compressions decrease the size of its bore, and thus allow the conical end of the pin to be wedged between said compressions.
In the drawings, A represents the pin, the main part of which fits the month end a of a thin metallic cylindrical tube or collar, B.
(No model.) Patented in Germany May 23, 1883, No. 25.701.
The other end of this tubethat is, the end to which the head D is attached-mas one or more compressions, E, or flat parts, as shown in Fig. 4. These compressions destroy the round bore of the tube, making it at one end of the form shown in Fig. 4. The month end a of the tube B is milled out flaring, so as to facilitate the insertion of the pin.
WVhen the conical or pointed end of the pin is to be protected, it is inserted into the tube B until it strikes the fiat face E, when by a slight turn of the pin it is firmly held by said compressions. The pin is removed by turning it in the opposite direction. The advantage of this method of forming the collar Bis, that aplain cylindrical tube can be used for it by simply compressing one of its ends at one or more places, which is a much more simple and inexpensive method of forming said collar than by reaming or otherwise.
I claim The combination of the collar B, which is compressed or fiattened'in one or more places, E, with the pin A, substantially as herein shown and described.
HUBERT FRITZ N EUSS.
