Description

DIAL POP. TIME PIECES.

WnEEEEE:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR ORLANDO GOTT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DIAL FOR TIME-PIECES.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,525, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed February 17, 1885. Serial No. 156,210.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR ORLANDO GOTT,
. a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and convenientimprovement for indi eating the twenty-four hours on a time-piece; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a dial to be used in connection with either the twelve or new twenty-four-hour time; and my invention consists in a movable dial on which are the hours of the day, and when used alone takes the place of an ordinary hour-hand, all of which will hereinafter fully appear.
The object of my invention is to have a dial which will be less confusing` than having twenty-four numbers all in view at one time, which object I gain by the following construction, reference being made tothe aceompany ing drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view. Fig. 2 isafront View with outside dial removed. Fig. Sis a vertical section.
Let A represent my inside movable dial.
B and C are intermediate wheels, having the saine center and being solidly fastened t0- placed at a proper distance from its edge to come directly beneath hole E, as in Fig. l, and should be as large as the spaces will allow and not be crowded. ,This dial must lie free and iiat beneath dial F. The outside dial, F, is
(No model.)
madein the ordinary manner, excepting there being only the minutes spaced in the circle. (the twelve hours are omitted). It has hole E cut through in such a way as to show one of the hours as marked on dial A. It should be about as wide as one and ahalfof the twentyfour spaces upon dial A. \Vhee1B may be made of brass and have forty-two teeth which depth into pinion D, from which it receives its power, as shown in Fig. 2. Vheel C, which is fastened to B, as its pinion, may be made of brass or steel, and have eighteen teeth which depth into my dial A and furnish its power. Cannon-pinion D has seven teeth, and is fastened friction-tight to the so-ealled center77 of the time-piece, where it gets the power, revolving once an hour and directly carrying the regular minutehand.
When my movable dial is used in combina tion with the twelve-hour time, the regular hour-hand and form of outside dial can be used, as dial A will not interfere with them.
Any combination of teeth may be used which will carry dial A at one twenty-fourth the speed of pinion D.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A Xed dial having the minutes of the hour indicated thereon, and provided with an opening at the top, and adial having the hours indicated thereon revolving aXially below the fixed dial and provided with internal gearteeth, as shown, in combination with gearwheels B C D, and the ininutehand, whereby the revolving hour-dial imparts motion to the minute-hand, and said dial may be rotated in either direction by applying power to the minute-hand, substantially as shown.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
ARTHUR ORLANDO GOTT.
