QIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,476. dated January 19, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ADOLPH SAMPSON, WILLIAM H. WRIGHT, and FRANK L. KINs- MAN, citizens of the United States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to produce an efficient and simple means for attaching the thills to carriages or other vehicles, whereby they are held more securelyin place, they may be lifted to any required position and held there, and any rattling of the parts is prevented, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown, described, and claimed by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isaside elevation of the thill-coupling complete, showing a portion of one of the thills connected to it. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the coupling, showing also a section through line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of a detached portion of the coupling, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the coupling complete.
In said drawings, or represents the shackle for attaching the coupling to the axle a. It is held in position to the axle by bolts a. The coupling is attached firmly to this shackle, either by bolts or made in one solid piece with it. a is the body of the coupling. It is provided with a cover, a pivoted by a pin, a, to the coupling. Both the cover and front part, b, of the coupling are provided with a hollow or recess, a a, (shown by the dotted lines 1' in Fig. 1,) of a form corresponding in shape to the ball or enlarged portion b of the pin b" on the coupling-iron If. This coupling-iron b is rigidly secured to the thills by bolts b, in the usual way, and is provided with a yoke, b having the shaft or pin b", provided with the enlarged portion 1). This enlarged portion may be either in the form of a sphere or in the shape shown, which we prefer, as it is a little more in the form of a wedge in cross-section, and consequently when the parts are brought together by the cover being closed and thebolt c screwed down there is not so much liability to rattle, and the thills are more easily held up in any position required. The cover of the coupling is provided with downwardlyprojectiug sides a 0", which project down over the sides ofthe body of the coupling and fit closely and exclude the dust. Between the cover and body of the coupling is a piece of rubber or other equivalent elastic material, 0 It will be seen that the hollow front part of the coupling is at aslightincline from the perpendicular, so that the pull upon it does not tend to open the cover, and even if the cover were open it would draw the vehicle forward without disengaging itself. In connecting the thills by our invention all that is required is to put or lay the enlarged portions 0 in the depressions in the couplings and fasten the cover down, screwing the bolts so as to bring the covers firmly down onto the rubber 0 which gives sufficiently to allow the parts to be brought closely together, so as to make a close smooth-working joint having sufficient friction to hold the thills in any position when lifted up out of the way.
We claim as our invention A thill-coupling consisting of the body of, having a semicircular hollow chamber, a, a cover pivoted by a pin, a", to the upper part of the body and provided with a corresponding hollow portion, a, and downwardly-projecting sides 0 0 for excluding the dust, and a small block of rubber to prevent rattling, in combination with the coupling-iron provided with a yoke, 0 having the enlarged portion 1) on the part 12 adapted to fit closely in the chambers in the body and cover, and bolts for holding the cover securely when closed, substantiallyas andfor the purposes described.
