NITED STATES PATENT ()rrion.
JOHN RYLE, OF PATERSON, NEWV JERSEY.
MACHINE FOR SINGEING FABRICS.
SJFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,474, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed July 2, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN RYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, Passaic county, State ofNew Jersey, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Singeing Ribbons and other Fabrics, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and a reliable means for the removal of fuzz, loose and straggling films from ribbons or other fabrics. This object I attain by the construction shown, which will be fully explained and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings shows one side of my invention in elevation, a portion only of the tube and legs of the frame being shown. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of some of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which figures the devices are in the position occupied by them when employed; and Fig. 4 shows the parts shown in Fig. 3, the devices in such figure occupying the position occupied by them when unemployed.
H represents a singeing-frame, having arranged centrally thereon a slide-bar, n. The outer top portions or sides of the bar a have a rabbet formed therein to accommodate pro- 0 jecting portions of guides n, which projecting portions of said guides n are adapted to fit the rabbet formed in the slide-bar nZto guide said bar to and from its position under the ribbon in the operation of singeing.
To the top of the slide-barn is arrangedand secured suitably a metal tube, a, in which tube is arranged a series of burners, n", on each side of which burners is secured in the bar a a shield, of, which shields are made slightly higher than the burners to shield the flame from the air in the singeing operation. The tube it connects with a tube, a and by means of a valve, n, with a flexible tube, a.
At a suitable distance from the slide-bar n are arranged standards e -one on each side of the frames-in which standards is journaled a roller, d, and at a like distance on the opposite side of the slide-bar are secured standards e--one on each side of the frame-in which standards is journaled a roller, 01".
On the front end of the singeing-frame there Serial Na l-36,608. (No model.)
are arranged and secured standards lc-oue on each side of said framein which standards is journaled a reel, B, having a handle, B to operate said reel, while the opposite end of the reel-shaft is provided with afriction-wheel, L, the periphery of which wheel is suitably grooved to accommodate a band, L, the free end of which band has a weight, L The band, which passes over and partly around said wheel L, is secured at its opposite end to the frame A, and acts to keep a suitable tension on the said reel B. The opposite end of the frame A has arranged thereon standards h and h, in which standards isjournaled and supported a reel, E, the shaft of which is provided with pulleys D, one of which pulleys is loose and the other fixed, a portion of the reel-shaft being square to accommodate the reel, which has a square opening running through it. This construction of the reel E and its shaft, while it secures the reel to its shaft for rotating purposes also admits of the reels removal from its shaft at pleasure.
To the top of the slide-bar a is pivoted on a pivot, a one end of a connerting'link, a". The opposite end of said link is pivoted, by a pivot, n", to the inner end of a shifting-lever, P, said lever having arranged in its outerend gnide-pins P one on each side of the belt Z. The said lever P is pivoted on a pivot-stud, P, which stud is secured in the frame H.
The operation is as follows: The ribbon to be singed is wound on the reel B by means of the handle B by which the reel is turned. The end of the ribbon is taken from the reel B forward to and under the roller 01, and forward over the slide-bar a, and from thence under the roller 01 to the reel E, to which the ribbon R is secured. The loose pulley on the reel-shaft having been put in motion by the belt Z, and the devices being in the position shown in Fig. 4, the burners n are next lighted, the valve '12 having been turned therefor, after which the slide-bar n is drawn under the ribbon R, which action, by means of the link a", draws inward the inner end of the lever P, and by such action moves the lever on its pivot P, throwing the guide-pins P in the direction of the fixed pulley, carrying the belt Z from off its loose pulley to its fixed pulley D, starting thus the reel E and the unwinding of the ribbon R from the reel B. The moving of the flame 0 under the ribbon R and the rotating of the reel having been simultaneously effected in the manner stated, the draft upon the ribbon R from the reel E,While unwinding said ribbon from the reel B, carries the said ribbon over the burners a, Where the ribbon is subjected to the action of the flame 0 while passing over the same, which singes off all fuzz, loose and straggling films therefrom. After being singed the ribbon R is wound upon the reel B. As the singeing proceeds, and the unwinding of the unsinged ribbon from off the reel 13 and the winding of the singed ribbon on the reel E is continued, and the reel E becomes filled with the singed fabric, and is to be removed from its shaft, at which time the devices occupy the position shown in Fig. 3, the slide-bar n is pushed from under the ribbon R in the direction of the lever P, which action, by means of link it, turns the lever p, and forces the shifting-pins P in thedireetion of the loose pulley D, carrying the belt Z from its fixed pulley to its loose pulley D, stopping thus the reel E and the unwinding of the rib bon from the reel B. The removal of the illuminating-gas flame 0 from under the ribbon R and the stopping of the reel E having been simultaneously effected in the manner stated, the reel E may be drawn from off its shaft and a duplicate reel placed thereon to continue the singeing.
'Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentlhe combinatiomwith thesupporting-frame H, of the slide-bar n on said frame, pipes a, burners n, pipe n", valve n, shields a as described, the flexible supply-tube n. the guides 1f, the link a for operating lever P, the lever P, pivot P, and guide-pins P, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN RYLE.
